Last week, when I drank cold water, I noticed that a back tooth on the right hurt. I brush my teeth every day, so why? I put up with it for three days, but the pain only got stronger.

月曜日げつようびの朝あさ、家いえの近ちかくの歯医者はいしゃに電話でんわをかけた。受付うけつけの人ひとは「今日きょうは夕方ゆうがたまで予約よやくがいっぱいですが、六時ろくじなら空あいています」と答こたえた。わたしは「では、そのときお願ねがいします」と言いった。

On Monday morning I phoned a dentist near my house. The receptionist answered, "Today we're fully booked until the evening, but six o'clock is free." I said, "Then I'd like that time, please."

五時半ごじはんに仕事しごとを終おえて、急いそいで歯医者はいしゃへ向むかった。受付うけつけで保険証ほけんしょうをお渡わたしした。待合室まちあいしつは静しずかで、小ちいさい音おとで音楽おんがくが流ながれていた。

I finished work at half past five and hurried to the dentist. At the reception desk I handed over my insurance card. The waiting room was quiet, with music playing softly.

先生せんせいはわたしの歯はを見みて、「小ちいさい虫歯むしばですね」と言いった。それから、レントゲンの写真しゃしんを見みせながら、治療ちりょうの説明せつめいをしていただいた。わたしは写真しゃしんを近ちかくで見みてもいいですかと聞きいた。

The dentist looked at my tooth and said, "It's a small cavity." Then, showing me the X-ray photo, they kindly explained the treatment. I asked if I could look at the photo up close.

「麻酔ますいを使つかいますから、痛いたくありませんよ」と先生せんせいは言いった。じつは、わたしは大人おとなになってから歯はの治療ちりょうをしたことがなかったので、少すこし怖こわかった。でも治療ちりょうは二十分にじゅっぷんで終おわり、ほとんど我慢がまんしなくてもよかった。

"We'll use anesthesia, so it won't hurt," the dentist said. Actually, I had never had dental treatment since becoming an adult, so I was a little scared. But the treatment ended in twenty minutes, and I hardly had to put up with anything.

帰かえりに、受付うけつけで次つぎの予約よやくを取とって、痛いたみ止どめの薬くすりをもらった。「夜よるも歯はを磨みがいてくださいね」と言いわれた。次つぎからは、痛いたくなる前まえに歯医者はいしゃへ行いこうと思おもう。

On my way out, I made my next appointment at the reception desk and received painkiller medicine. "Please brush your teeth at night too," they told me. From now on, I'll go to the dentist before it starts hurting.
