On Sunday I was cleaning out the closet. An old smell came from inside. When I pulled out a bag from the back, a small box fell onto my foot. Inside the box was a single cassette tape with no name and no date written on it.

I thought I'd listen to it once before throwing it away. But there is no longer any machine at home that plays tapes. When I asked my father, he told me that our neighbour Mr. Ogawa apparently has an old radio-cassette player.
午後 、テープを持 って小川 さんの家 へ行 った。小川 さんはラジカセを出 して、「電池 を変 えるために電池 を買 うために店 へ行 きました。 I went to the shop in order to buy batteries.少 し待 ってください」と言 った。それから、「一人 で聞 くのはこわいでしょう。一緒 に聞 きませんか一緒 に聞 きませんか。 Won't you listen to it with me?」と言 ってくれた。

In the afternoon I took the tape to Mr. Ogawa's house. He got out the player and said, "Wait a moment while I change the batteries." Then he added, "It must be frightening to listen alone. Won't you listen to it together with me?"
テープを入 れると、最初 は「ザー」という音 が三十秒 ぐらい三十秒 ぐらい待 ちました。 I waited for about thirty seconds.続 いた。小川 さんは「何 も録音 されていないかもしれませんね」と言 った。私 も同 じことを考 えていた。

When we put the tape in, a hissing "shhh" went on for about thirty seconds at first. Mr. Ogawa said, "Perhaps nothing was recorded on it." I had been thinking the same thing.
しかし、とうとう声 が聞 こえた。祖母 の声 だった。祖母 は歌 をうたっていて、その後 ろで小 さい子 どもが笑 っていた。私 は、この歌 を聞 いたことがあるこの歌 を聞 いたことがあります。 I have heard this song before.ような気 がした。笑 っている子 どもは、たぶん私 だ。

But at last a voice could be heard. It was my grandmother's voice. She was singing a song, and behind her a small child was laughing. I felt as though I had heard this song before. The laughing child is probably me.
歌 が終 わると、小川 さんは「録音 しておいてよかったですね」と静 かに言 った。私 の気分 はうまく説明 できない。悲 しいのに、安心 もしていた。こんな体験 は初 めてだ。テープは元 の箱 に戻 して、押入 れの一番 上 に置 いた。捨 てるのはやめた。

When the song ended, Mr. Ogawa said quietly, "It's a good thing someone recorded it." I cannot explain my mood well. I was sad, and yet also relieved. This is the first experience of its kind for me. I put the tape back in its original box and placed it at the very top of the closet. I gave up the idea of throwing it away.
