A day trip to Kyoto: leaving your luggage in a coin locker so you can explore unencumbered, choosing a free locker, setting a PIN, and retrieving your bag later. Grammar

〜ば

if ~ (a conditional form describing a condition that leads to a result)

verb conditional ば-form (godan: e-row + ば；ichidan: stem + れば)

〜てはいけない

must not ~ / it's not allowed to ~ (prohibition)

verb て-form + はいけない

ここに車くるまを止とめてはいけません。

You must not park your car here.

〜ので

because / since (a softer, more objective reason than から)

plain form (な-adjective/noun + な) + ので

雨あめが降ふっているので、傘かさを持もっていきます。

Since it's raining, I'll bring an umbrella.

〜てみる

to try doing ~ (to see how it goes)

verb て-form + みる

新あたらしい店みせに入はいってみました。

I tried going into the new shop.

〜つもり

intend to ~ / plan to ~ (a personal intention)

verb dictionary form (or ない-form) + つもりだ

来年らいねん、日本にほんへ行いくつもりです。

I intend to go to Japan next year.

〜はずだ

should be ~ / it must be the case that ~ (a confident expectation based on reason)

plain form + はずだ

その番号ばんごうで、開あくはずです。

It should open with that number.

Today I'm taking a day trip to Kyoto for sightseeing. Walking around carrying big luggage is tough, so I decided to leave it in a coin locker at the station.

コインロッカーの前まえに行いくと、たくさんの種類しゅるいがありましたが、空あきが少すくなくて、少すこし心配しんぱいになりました。空あいているロッカーを探さがしてみると、ちょうどいいサイズの空あきが一ひとつ見みつかりました。

訳 English

When I went to the coin lockers, there were many types, but there weren't many free ones, which worried me a little. I tried looking for an open locker, and I found one with just the right size available.

料金りょうきんは荷物にもつのサイズによって違ちがって、私わたしの荷物にもつには五百円ごひゃくえんかかりました。硬貨こうかを入いれて、暗証番号あんしょうばんごうを決きめました。番号ばんごうは忘わすれてはいけないので、スマホにメモしておきました。

訳 English

The fee differs depending on the size of your luggage, and mine cost five hundred yen. I put in coins and set a PIN number. I mustn't forget the number, so I made a note of it on my phone in advance.

ロッカーの画面がめんに「ご利用りようありがとうございます」と表示ひょうじされました。荷物にもつを預あずけたので、身軽みがるになって観光かんこうできました。夕方ゆうがた五時ごじまでに戻もどるつもりで、街まちを歩あるき始はじめました。

The locker screen showed "Thank you for using this service." With my luggage deposited, I could go sightseeing unencumbered. Planning to be back by five in the evening, I started walking around the town.

京都きょうとの町まちを歩あるいて、有名ゆうめいなお寺てらや神社じんじゃを見みて回まわりました。とても楽たのしかったですが、荷物にもつがなかったので、思おもったより長ながく歩あるくことができました。

I walked around the town of Kyoto and went to see famous temples and shrines. It was a lot of fun, and since I had no luggage, I was able to walk much farther than I expected.

夕方ゆうがた、駅えきに戻もどって、コインロッカーの前まえに行いきました。暗証番号あんしょうばんごうを入力にゅうりょくすれば、ドアが開あくはずです。メモを見みながら番号ばんごうを入力にゅうりょくすると、ロッカーが開あいて、荷物にもつを取とり出だすことができました。

訳 English

In the evening, I went back to the station and to the coin lockers. If I enter the PIN, the door should open. Looking at my note, I entered the number, the locker opened, and I was able to take out my luggage.

荷物にもつを取とり出だすと、朝あさより少すこし重おもく感かんじましたが、預あずけておいてよかったと思おもいました。コインロッカーの料金りょうきんは少すこし高たかかったですが、身軽みがるに観光かんこうできたので、払はらう価値かちがありました。

When I took out my luggage, it felt a bit heavier than it did in the morning, but I was glad I had left it there. The coin locker fee was a little high, but since I could go sightseeing unencumbered, it was worth paying.
