English

I could not swim until I was thirty-eight. Since April I have been going to the adult class at the ward pool. Apart from me there are five people in the beginners' group, and I am the oldest. The most embarrassing part is lining up in a swimsuit. Once I am in the water it is quiet in there, and I cannot see anybody's face.

English

Three months of practice, and I still could not swim twenty-five metres. Past ten metres my legs would sink and my body would stop floating. Every time, the teacher says, "Please breathe out under the water." According to the teacher, adults put too much strength into their bodies. Knowing that did not make the strength come out. After swimming with everything I had, it felt as though I had been sweating, even in the water.

English

On a Saturday in July, while I was resting at the edge of the pool, a girl in the next lane spoke to me. She was about ten, apparently waiting for the next class. "Mister, you're looking down." When I stayed silent, she went on: "If you look ahead, you float."

English

The next time I swam, I looked at the wall ahead instead of at my legs. Only the direction of my face had changed, and my legs did not sink. Fifteen metres, twenty metres. When my hand touched the wall, I could not believe it myself. It took me three months to swim twenty-five metres. When I lifted my face, a different class was already in the girl's lane. I never got to thank her.

English

"Your form isn't good, mind you," the teacher laughed, and still drew a circle on the record sheet. "I'll make fifty metres my next goal," I said. Even now fifty is beyond me, and I stand up halfway. Letting the strength out of your body is harder than swimming fast. But I no longer stop at ten metres. Every Saturday I look at the next lane. I have not seen that girl again.
