N4 consolidation story #265. Four people, the narrator among them, had said they would help with his sister's move; by nine on the Sunday morning the other three are gone and it is the two of them. Everything goes into the new flat except the fridge, and the stairs go up to the third floor with no lift. Patterns: 〜は〜が、〜は, 〜と（自然な結果）, 〜のは〜だ, 〜ことになる, 〜ほうがいい, 〜かどうか.

Grammar

〜は〜が、〜は

as for A it is ~, but as for B it is ~ (explicit contrast)

At nine, the only people standing in front of the old flat were my sister and me. The truck had already been hired. In the end it worked out that the two of us carried everything.

The new flat was twenty minutes away by car, on the third floor, with no lift. The boxes are light, but the furniture is heavy. After three trips up the stairs, your legs shake. Our midday break was fifteen minutes only, and my sister apologised over and over. Honestly, my mood was not very good.

六時ろくじ、外そとはまだ明あかるかった。残のこっているのは冷蔵庫れいぞうこだけだった。階段かいだんの幅はばを見みて、妹いもうとが言いった。「もうやめよう。明日あした、業者ぎょうしゃに頼たのんだほうがいい」。私わたしは断ことわった。明日あしたは二人ふたりとも仕事しごとだし、冷蔵庫れいぞうこのない夜よるを妹いもうとに過すごさせたくなかった。

At six it was still light outside. The only thing left was the refrigerator. Looking at the width of the stairs, my sister said, "Let's stop. We had better ask a removal firm tomorrow." I refused. Tomorrow we were both at work, and I did not want to make my sister spend a night without a refrigerator.

We did not know whether or not the refrigerator could get round the second-floor corner. We wrapped it in a blanket, and I took the bottom while my sister held the other side. As we changed direction at the corner of the second floor, a white scratch appeared on the wall. At twenty past seven the refrigerator was in place in the kitchen.

床ゆかに座すわって、コンビニの弁当べんとうを食たべた。ご飯はんは冷つめたかった。妹いもうとは壁かべの傷きずを見みて笑わらった。「これ、出でるときに払はらうのかな」。私わたしの気分きぶんは、朝あさとはすっかり変かわっていた。傷きずは私わたしの手ての高たかさにある。

We sat on the floor and ate convenience-store bento. The rice was cold. My sister looked at the scratch on the wall and laughed. "I wonder if I'll have to pay for this when I move out." My own mood had changed completely from the morning. The scratch is at the height of my hands.
