English
Mori-san, from the same section as me, brings bread she has baked at home every Monday morning. Each loaf is wrapped separately in paper, and it looks like something from a bakery. Honestly, though, it is a little hard. The flavour is thin, too.
English
Even so, every week I said "It's delicious" in a bright voice. Then, once Mori-san was back at her seat, I quietly slipped it into my lunch bag and took it home. At home I put the hardened bread into soup and ate it. Better than throwing it away, was how I felt about it.
English
Last Monday, Mori-san stood in front of my desk and asked, "Taguchi-san, which do you prefer, walnut or raisin?" Without thinking I answered, "Walnut, I suppose." Mori-san smiled a little. "I haven't put walnuts in it this week or last week."
I know myself that my bread is still hard. Nobody wants to say what they really think. For half a year, all I ever did was praise it.。
English
My face went hot. Mori-san did not get angry. "It's all right. I know myself that my bread is still hard," she said. "But at work nobody wants to say what they really think, so I can't tell what to fix." For half a year, all I ever did was praise it. That had not been kindness.
It looks lovely, but I think the inside is a little hard. "Next week I'll try making it a bit softer," Mori-san said.」 Apparently, the more bread you bake, the better you get.
English
That day, for the first time, I said it honestly: "It looks lovely, but I think the inside is a little hard." Mori-san nodded. "Next week I'll try making it a bit softer," she said. This week's bread really was soft. Apparently the more bread you bake, the better you get. This time I ate it in front of my colleague, and the paper wrapping ended up empty on my desk.
