Sasaki-san next door was going away on a three-day business trip, and asked me to look after the dog. He is a big white dog called Koro. I borrowed the key and asked where the food was kept. The walks, I was told, could be whenever I could manage. All I had to do was feed him morning and evening. I thought it was the easiest job in the world.

We walked about fifteen minutes, as far as the bridge in the park. On the way back we got a little wet in the rain. When we got home and I set the dish out, Koro ate the lot in three minutes. In the end we never went to the hospital. He will not eat until he has come back from his walk. I was simply the one who did not know. Koro knew all of it.

On the third day Koro was waiting at the entrance before I was even up. That evening Sasaki-san rang. “I have Koro here safe,” I said. “He ate well today.” Sasaki-san laughed. “The walk comes first. It has been that order for ten years.” On the day of the return, Sasaki-san gave me sweets from Sendai to thank me. Even now, on Sunday mornings, with no dog at all, I walk that river path.
