There is still a landline in my room, because my mother back home remembers no other number. Since last winter, there are Saturday evenings when a wrong number comes through, at about eight. It is always the same elderly man's voice, asking, "Is Yoshiko there?" I answer, "You have the wrong number," and hang up. That went on for six months.

One Saturday in June I was out, and the call went to the answering machine. When I played the recording back, the man was reading the number out to himself. Only the last digit was different from mine. Which means he had gone on making the same wrong call for six months.

The following Saturday I had nothing on. The phone rang five minutes past eight. This time, instead of hanging up, I said, "My name is Nishi. There is no one here called Yoshiko." He was quiet for a moment, then added the surname: "Nakai. Yoshiko Nakai." I asked him, "Please try reading me the number in your notebook." The number he read out did, as I thought, differ in the last digit.

We talked for about twenty minutes after that. Yoshiko is his daughter; she lives in Sendai and has two children. She is busy with work, he told me. His notebook is ten years old and the writing has gone faint, he said. When I asked him to look at a New Year's card instead, he read out the correct number, and I wrote it on a sheet of paper, making the letters bigger. When I said, "I'll write it out and post it to you," he gave me his address. Before he hung up he said, "Thank you for being someone to talk to."

I posted the paper on Monday. After that, the phone stopped ringing on Saturday evenings. Whether the number got fixed, or whether it was some other reason, I do not know. Even now, when eight o'clock comes round on a Saturday, I feel a little unsettled, and I leave the answering machine turned up rather than down. The room stays quiet. I still have not deleted that recording. The one time I played it again, what stayed with me was not the number but the voice.
