I wanted to go to my friend's house, but I got lost. I kept walking while looking at the map, but I still couldn't figure it out.

近ちかくに交番こうばんが見みえたので、警察官けいさつかんに道みちを聞ききたいと思おもった。警察官けいさつかんは「どうなさいましたか」と聞きいてくれた。

訳 English

Since I could see a police box nearby, I thought I wanted to ask a police officer for directions. The officer asked me, "What's the matter?" (honorific).

わたしは「みどりという駅えきへ行いきたいです」と言いった。警察官けいさつかんは地図ちずを出だして、「道みちを教おしえてあげましょう」と言いって、ていねいに説明せつめいしてくれた。

訳 English

I said, "I want to go to a station called Midori." The officer took out a map and said, "Let me tell you the way," then explained politely for me.

警察官けいさつかんは「まずまっすぐ歩あるいて、次つぎの交差点こうさてんを左ひだりに曲まがってください」と言いった。「大おおきな本屋ほんやが目印めじるしです。覚おぼえるのはそれだけでいいです」と教おしえてくれた。

訳 English

The officer said, "First walk straight, then turn left at the next intersection." He also told me, "A big bookstore is the landmark. That's the only thing you need to remember."

礼れいを言いって、交番こうばんを出でた。信号しんごうからまっすぐ歩あるいて、交差点こうさてんを左ひだりに曲まがると、本屋ほんやが見みえた。もう道みちに迷まよわなかった。

訳 English

I thanked him and left the police box. Walking straight from the traffic light and turning left at the intersection, I could see the bookstore. I didn't get lost anymore.
