N4 consolidation story #273. The narrator, who sometimes has night work and sleeps from seven, puts a polite note in the post box of the flat below about the seven o'clock piano practice. After that the piano is no longer heard at seven, and two weeks pass in silence. He is sure his note did it, until he meets the mother on the stairs. Patterns: 〜ことがある, 〜ていただけますか, 〜いたします, 〜なくなる, 〜そうだ（伝聞）, 〜ことになる.

The flat I live in is on the third floor, and in the flat below there is a primary-school girl. Since last summer, piano practice has started at seven every evening. My work is normally in the daytime, and though it is not every week, there are times when I work at night. On those days I make a point of sleeping from seven until half past nine, so the sound of the piano wakes me up at exactly that time.

五月ごがつの終おわりに、私わたしは短みじかい手紙てがみを書かいた。「夜よるの仕事しごとの日ひだけで申もうし訳わけありませんが、練習れんしゅうの時間じかんを少すこし早はやくしていただけますか。よろしくお願ねがいいたします」。三階さんがいの部屋へやの番号ばんごうだけ書かいて、夜よるのうちに下したの部屋へやの郵便受けゆうびんうけに入いれた。

At the end of May I wrote a short letter. "I am sorry to ask, and only on the days I work at night, but could you please make the practice time a little earlier? Thank you in advance for your kind consideration." I wrote only the number of my third-floor flat, and put it in the post box of the flat below during the night.

次つぎの夜よるの仕事しごとの日ひも、その次つぎの週しゅうも、七時しちじにピアノの音おとが聞きこえなくなった。一週間いっしゅうかん静しずかで、二週間にしゅうかん静しずかだった。私わたしの手紙てがみが強つよすぎたのだろうかと思おもった。七時しちじになると、私わたしのほうが時計とけいを見みるようになった。

On my next night-work day, and the week after that as well, the sound of the piano was no longer to be heard at seven. One week was quiet, and two weeks were quiet. I wondered whether my letter had been too strong. When seven o'clock came, it was I who started looking at the clock.

六月ろくがつの土曜日どようび、階段かいだんで下したの部屋へやのお母かあさんに会あった。私わたしは手紙てがみのことを自分じぶんから言いった。お母かあさんは笑わらって、「手紙てがみは届とどいていますよ」と言いった。次つぎの日ひから練習れんしゅうは六時ろくじに変かわったが、その三日後みっかご、女おんなの子こが学校がっこうで転ころんで手首てくびを折おったのだという。三週間さんしゅうかんはピアノが弾ひけないそうだ。

On a Saturday in June I met the mother from the flat below on the stairs. I brought the letter up myself. She smiled and said, "Your letter did reach us." From the day after it, practice moved to six o'clock — but three days after that, she says, the girl fell over at school and broke her wrist. I hear she cannot play the piano for three weeks.

私わたしは急きゅうに声こえが出でなくて、「早はやく治なおるといいですね」とだけ言いった。その子こは廊下ろうかでおとなしく立たっていた。手首てくびが治なおって、七月しちがつの初はじめから、また六時ろくじから練習れんしゅうすることになった。私わたしは今いまでも六時ろくじに音おとが始はじまると、手首てくびはもう大丈夫だいじょうぶなんだな、と思おもう。

My voice suddenly would not come, and all I said was, "I hope it heals soon." The girl was standing quietly in the corridor. Her wrist healed, and from the beginning of July it was decided that she would practise from six o'clock again. Even now, when the sound starts at six, I think: so the wrist is all right again.
