When I moved house in March, I sold the bicycle I had ridden for eight years to a second-hand shop. My new room was cramped and there was nowhere to keep it. The person at the shop looked at it for about five minutes and said, "We will take it off your hands for 3,000 yen." I thought that was cheap, but my head was full of the moving boxes that day, and I never brought up the price.

On an evening in May, walking near the station, I noticed my own bicycle in the window below the shop sign. The price was 12,000 yen. I counted on my fingers in front of the window. Four times the price. The saddle had been changed for a new one, and the tyres looked new too. Beside it was a notice stuck up that read "servicing completed".

The high-school student rode off on the bicycle. Looking at the bicycles parked at an angle in front of the shop, I read the price notice one more time. I had not been able to buy it back, and yet I felt light. I walked home past the sign. It took thirty minutes to the house. It was not bad.
