N4 consolidation story #272. The narrator sits under the air-conditioning vent in a small office and has never said he is cold. In July he starts raising the setting by two degrees while the others are at lunch, and by three o'clock it is always back down. He stays at his desk one Thursday to find out who is doing it. Patterns: 〜たことがある／ない, 〜ているところ, 〜みたいだ, 〜（よ）うと思う, 〜間に, 〜（ら）れる.

My company is a small office of eight people, and there is only one air-conditioning panel, beside the door. My desk is directly below the vent the air comes out of. Since June the afternoons have always been cold, and I work with a jacket on. Even so, I have never said that I am cold. Saying it honestly felt like too much trouble.

七月しちがつに入はいって、私わたしは皆みんなが昼ひる休やすみで出でている間あいだに、冷房れいぼうの設定せっていを二度にど上あげるようになった。誰だれにも言いわなかった。午後ごごの気分きぶんはずいぶんよくなったが、三時さんじごろになると、パネルの温度おんどはまた元もとの数字すうじに戻もどっていた。誰だれかが温度おんどを下さげているみたいだった。

When July came, I started raising the air-conditioning setting by two degrees while everyone was out on their lunch break. I did not tell anyone. My mood in the afternoons got a great deal better, but by about three o'clock the temperature on the panel was always back at the original number. It seemed that somebody was lowering the temperature.

毎日まいにち同おなじことが続つづいて、小ちいさなストレスになった。誰だれがやっているのか、確たしかめようと思った。木曜日もくようび、私わたしはコンビニに行いかないで、自分じぶんの席せきでパンを食たべながら待まった。

The same thing went on every day, and it became a small stress. I decided I would find out who was doing it. On Thursday, instead of going to the convenience store, I waited at my own desk, eating a bread roll.

一時いちじ二十分にじゅっぷん、階段かいだんの音おとがして、桑田くわたさんが戻もどってきた。私わたしが顔かおを上あげた時ときには、桑田くわたさんがパネルを押おしているところだった。桑田くわたさんは私わたしを見みて、手てを止とめた。「毎日まいにち上あげているのは私わたしです」と私わたしは言いった。桑田くわたさんの席せきは窓まどのそばそばで、午後ごごは日ひが強つよく当あたる。背中せなかが汗あせで濡ぬれるのだそうだ。

At one twenty there was a sound on the stairs and Kuwata-san came back. By the time I lifted my head, Kuwata-san was right in the middle of pressing the panel. Kuwata-san saw me and stopped. "I am the one raising it every day," I said. Kuwata-san's desk is next to the window, and in the afternoon the sun hits it hard. Kuwata-san's back gets wet with sweat, apparently.

私わたしたちは十分じゅっぷんほど相談そうだんした。次つぎの日曜日にちようび、私わたしはホームセンターで風かぜの向むきを変かえる板いたを千二百円せんにひゃくえんで買かって、月曜日げつようびに出でる口くちに付つけた。桑田くわたさんは小ちいさい扇風機せんぷうきを自分じぶんの席せきに置おいた。設定せっていは二十六度にじゅうろくどのままだ。先週せんしゅう、パネルには「さわらないでください」と書かいた紙かみが貼はられた。貼はったのは私わたしたちではないので、事務所じむしょには他ほかにも何なにか言いいたい人ひとがいたのだろう。

The two of us talked it over for about ten minutes. The next Sunday I bought a board that changes the direction of the draught at the DIY store for 1,200 yen, and on Monday I fitted it to the vent. Kuwata-san put a small electric fan on the desk. The setting is still 26 degrees. Last week a piece of paper reading "please do not touch" was stuck on the panel. We were not the ones who stuck it there, so there must have been somebody else in the office with something to say as well.
