N4 consolidation story #267. Mosquitoes get into the flat every night, the window screen has a tear in it, and the narrator spends a hot Saturday replacing the whole mesh himself. The work comes out well. The mosquitoes come back. Patterns: 〜にします, 〜より〜ほうが, 〜そう（様子）, 〜（よ）うと思う, 〜ので, 〜みたいだ.

Since August began I have had one night after another woken up by mosquitoes. I do not close the window, but the screen is properly in place. Looking carefully one morning, I found a torn spot about five centimetres across near the bottom of the screen. When I touched it with a finger, it looked as if it would tear further at any moment. This is the culprit, I thought.

管理かんりの会社かいしゃに電話でんわすると、網あみの交換こうかんは六千円ろくせんえんだと言いわれた。駅前えきまえの店みせでは、網あみとゴムで千二百円せんにひゃくえんだった。店みせに頼たのむより、自分じぶんでやるほうが安やすい。売うり場ばには白しろい網あみと黒くろい網あみがあって、外そとが見みやすいと書かいてあった黒くろい網あみにします、と店員てんいんに言いった。土曜どようの朝あさに直なおそうと思おもった。

When I phoned the management company, they said replacing the mesh would be six thousand yen. At the shop in front of the station, mesh and rubber came to one thousand two hundred yen. Doing it myself is cheaper than asking a shop. The section had white mesh and black mesh, and I told the assistant I would go with the black one, which the label said was easier to see out through. I thought I would fix it on Saturday morning.

昼ひるは暑あついので、七時しちじから始はじめた。網戸あみどを外はずして、古ふるいゴムを引ひっ張ぱると、黒くろい粉こながぼろぼろ落おちた。網あみを枠わくの幅はばより少すこし大おおきく切きるのだが、私わたしのはさみでは線せんが曲まがった。ゴムを入いれる作業さぎょうには二時間にじかんかかり、汗あせでシャツが重おもくなった。それでも、十時じゅうじには新あたらしい網戸あみどが窓まどに入はいった。

Since the middle of the day is hot, I started at seven. I took the screen off, and when I pulled out the old rubber, black dust came crumbling off it. You cut the mesh a little larger than the width of the frame, but with my scissors the line went crooked. Getting the rubber in took two hours, and my shirt grew heavy with sweat. Even so, by ten the new screen was in the window.

その夜よる、私わたしは三時さんじに腕うでをかかれて目めを覚さました。部屋へやは静しずかで、耳みみの近ちかくで小ちいさい音おとがした。網戸あみどのせいではないみたいだ。電気でんきをつけて窓まどを調しらべると、網戸あみどを右みぎに寄よせていたために、内側うちがわのガラスとの間あいだに指ゆびが入はいるほどの隙間すきまができていた。虫むしはそこから入はいっていたのだ。

That night I woke at three with a bite on my arm. The room was quiet, and there was a small sound near my ear. It seems it is not the screen's fault. I put the light on and examined the window: because I had pushed the screen over to the right, a gap wide enough for a finger had opened between it and the inner pane of glass. That is where the insects had been coming in.

網戸あみどを左ひだりに動うごかすだけで、隙間すきまは消きえた。それから四日よっか、蚊かに起おこされていない。五ごセンチの破やぶれは、たぶん蚊かとは関係かんけいがなかった。土曜どようの三時間さんじかんと千二百円せんにひゃくえんで、私わたしは困こまっていないところをきれいに直なおした訳わけだ。曲まがった線せんは、外そとからは見みえない。

Simply moving the screen to the left made the gap disappear. In the four days since, I have not been woken by a mosquito. The five-centimetre tear probably had nothing to do with them. For three hours of a Saturday and one thousand two hundred yen, I have beautifully repaired the part that was not giving me trouble. The crooked line cannot be seen from outside.
