N4 consolidation story #268. The narrator sends a postcard to a local radio programme's listener corner about an old man who wiped a wet bench at the bus stop outside his shop, and adds a joke about his own dirty sign. In the fifth week he hears the card read out: the old man is cut, the joke is kept, and the presenter says the shop has been at the station front for thirty years. That evening a listener telephones the shop. Patterns: 〜ことがある, 〜は〜が、〜は, 〜ということ, 〜ぐらい／くらい, 〜そうだ(伝聞), 〜おきに.

Eight years ago I took over my father's electrical shop. Every morning I turn the radio on after I get to the shop. The local programme has a corner that reads out listeners' postcards every other week. One morning I wrote a postcard myself for the first time. At the bus stop in front of the shop, an old man I did not know wiped the wet bench with his own handkerchief, said "go ahead" to the person lined up behind him, and walked off without getting on the bus. That was the story I wanted to write. At the end I wrote one joke as well: that our shop sign is as dirty as that bench.

はがきを出だしてから、毎週まいしゅうその時間じかんにラジオを聞きいた。番組ばんぐみの司会しかいの人ひとの話はなしでは、はがきは毎週まいしゅうたくさん届とどくそうだ。だから、送おくっても読よまれないことがある。三週間さんしゅうかんたっても、私わたしのはがきは読よまれなかった。妻つまは「もう忘わすれたら」と笑わらったが、私わたしは毎週まいしゅうラジオをつけた。

After I sent the postcard, I listened to the radio at that time every week. According to the programme's presenter, a great many postcards arrive every week. So there are times when a card is not read out even though you send it. Three weeks passed and my postcard had not been read. My wife laughed and said, "Why not forget about it," but I turned the radio on every week.

五週目ごしゅうめの朝あさ、店みせの奥おくで古ふるい扇風機せんぷうきを直なおしていたとき、ラジオから自分じぶんの名前なまえが聞きこえた。手てが止とまった。おじいさんの話はなしは切きられていたが、じょうだんは残のこっていた。「店みせの看板かんばんは、バス停ていのベンチと同おなじぐらい汚よごれています」。そのあと司会しかいの人ひとが「駅前えきまえで三十年さんじゅうねんやっているお店みせです」と付つけ加くわえた。うちは駅前えきまえではないし、私わたしがこの店みせをついだのは八年前はちねんまえである。録音ろくおんもしていなかったので、もう一度いちど聞きくこともできなかった。

On the morning of the fifth week, while I was repairing an old electric fan at the back of the shop, I heard my own name come out of the radio. My hand stopped. The part about the old man had been cut, but the joke had been kept. "The shop's sign is as dirty as the bench at the bus stop." After that the presenter added, "It's a shop that has been at the station front for thirty years." We are not at the station front, and I took the shop over eight years ago. I had not recorded it either, so I could not listen to it a second time.

夕方ゆうがた、店みせの電話でんわが鳴なった。知しらない女おんなの人ひとの声こえだった。ラジオを聞きいて、看板かんばんのじょうだんで笑わらってしまったという。「さっき、そちらの店みせの前まえのバス停ていでバスを待まちました。看板かんばんもベンチも見みました」。そう言いって、また笑わらった。正直しょうじき、少すこし腹はらが立たっていた。しかし、人ひとに通つうじるのはじょうだんのほうだということが、その電話でんわで分わかった。

In the evening the shop telephone rang. It was the voice of a woman I did not know. She said she had heard the radio and had ended up laughing at the joke about the sign. "A little while ago I waited for a bus at the stop in front of your shop. I looked at the sign and at the bench too." She said that and laughed again. Honestly, I had been a little angry. But that telephone call made me understand that the joke is the part that gets through to people.

次つぎの日ひ、私わたしは二枚目にまいめのはがきを書かいた。今度こんどは、じょうだんを最初さいしょに書かいた。そのあとに、ベンチをふいたおじいさんの話はなしを書かいた。先さきに笑わらわせておけば、その次つぎまで読よんでもらえるかもしれない。ポストに入いれてから、私わたしは店みせの看板かんばんをふいた。

The next day I wrote a second postcard. This time I wrote the joke first. After it I wrote the story of the old man who wiped the bench. If I make them laugh first, perhaps they will read as far as what comes next. After putting it in the postbox, I wiped the shop sign.
