N4 consolidation story #266. A day before the high-school visit to the printing works, the narrator is asked to stand in for the colleague who always gives the tour. He writes the ten minutes out and learns it by heart. The script gets him as far as the first question he did not prepare for. Patterns: 〜ているところ, 〜のに（目的）, 〜と申します, 〜ことがある, お〜する, 〜てはいけない.

I work at a printing works a short way from the station. Every summer, high-school students from nearby come on a study visit. Showing them round is always Mori-san's job, but this year Mori-san ran a fever the day before. "It's only ten minutes," the section chief told me, and so it fell to me to stand in.

Honestly, I am bad at speaking in front of people. So that night I wrote the ten minutes' worth of words out on paper and learned them in order, step by step. Which part is needed in order to feed the paper straight; where the ink comes out. It came to twelve steps in all. My wife helped by playing the listener.

当日とうじつ、高校生こうこうせいの人数にんずうは十二人じゅうににんだった。「山口やまぐちと申もうします。名札なふだをお配くばりします」。ここまでは紙かみの通とおりだった。機械きかいの前まえまで歩あるいて、「ここに手てを入いれてはいけません」と言いった。自分じぶんの声こえが少すこし高たかくなっていることに気きがついた。

On the day, the number of high-school students was twelve. "My name is Yamaguchi. I will hand out the name badges." This far, it went exactly as on the paper. I walked them to the front of the machine and said, "You must not put your hand in here." I noticed that my own voice had gone a little high.

手順てじゅんを八やっつ終おえたころ、一番いちばん後うしろの生徒せいとが手てを挙あげた。「失敗しっぱいした紙かみはどうするんですか」。その質問しつもんは紙かみに書かいていなかった。「たまにインクが薄うすくなって、紙かみを捨すてることがある」と答こたえると、質問しつもんが三みっつ続つづいた。覚おぼえてきた順番じゅんばんは、そこで止とまった。

Around the time I had finished eight of the steps, the pupil at the very back raised a hand. "What do you do with the paper that comes out wrong?" That question was not written on my paper. When I answered, "Now and then the ink goes faint and we throw the paper away," three more questions followed. The order I had memorised stopped there.

私わたしは紙かみをポケットに入いれて、一人ひとりにボタンを押おさせた。機械きかいが紙かみを送おくっているところを、全員ぜんいんが近ちかくで見みた。残のこりの五分ごふん、私わたしの声こえは普通ふつうだった。次つぎの週しゅう、森もりさんに十二じゅうにの手順てじゅんの紙かみを渡わたした。「来年らいねんは、最初さいしょにボタンを押おさせてください」と言いった。

I put the paper in my pocket and had one of them press the button. Everyone watched from close up while the machine was feeding the paper. For the remaining five minutes my voice was normal. The next week I handed Mori-san the paper with the twelve steps on it. "Next year," I said, "let them press the button first."
