N4 consolidation story #269. The narrator walks home from the neighbourhood public bath in someone else's sandals — same colour, one size too big — and only notices at his door. He takes them back the next evening; his own pair is already at the counter, with a note and a surname on it. Patterns: 〜ているところ, 〜のは〜だ, 〜くする・にする, 〜ませんか, 〜に気がつく, 〜そうだ（様態）.

There is an old public bath near my house. On the way home from work I go there almost every night. I put my sandals in the shoe locker at the entrance and pay at the counter. My locker is always number five. That night was the same as always. It was after I got home that I thought something was odd. The sandals were the same colour as mine, but one size bigger. I noticed that they were not my own.

Honestly, I had felt almost nothing while I was wearing them. It is a five-minute walk from the bath to my house. The water was hot, and when I got out I was a little dazed. Inside the bath everything is white and you cannot see well. It is the same in front of the shoe lockers, and it seems I put the sandals on going by colour alone. The big sandals looked as though they would fall off with every step. I walked with my feet gripping hard.

次つぎの日ひの夜よる、そのサンダルを持もって銭湯せんとうに戻もどった。番台ばんだいの人ひとがお金かねを数かぞえているところだった。五番ごばんの下駄箱げたばこを開あけると、私わたしのサンダルはなかった。「昨日きのう、預あずかりましたよ」と番台ばんだいの人ひとが言いって、私わたしのサンダルを渡わたしてくれた。持もってきたサンダルは番台ばんだいに預あずけた。下駄箱げたばこの中なかに、小ちいさい紙かみが入いっていた。

The next evening I took the sandals back to the bath. The person at the counter was in the middle of counting the money. When I opened locker number five, my own sandals were not there. "I took them in yesterday," the person at the counter said, and handed my sandals back to me. I left the pair I had brought with the counter. Inside the shoe locker there was a small piece of paper.

紙かみには「松井まつい」という苗字みょうじと、短みじかい文ぶんが書かいてあった。「サンダルは番台ばんだいに預あずけておきます。よかったら、一度いちど会あいませんか」。番台ばんだいの人ひとが教おしえてくれた。松井まついさんもここに何年なんねんも通かよっている。松井まついさんが来くるのは九時十分くじじっぷんごろで、私わたしが帰かえるのはいつも九時くじごろだ。同おなじ銭湯せんとうにいて、一度いちども会あっていない。あの夜よるだけ、松井まついさんはいつもより早はやく来きていたそうだ。

On the paper were the surname "Matsui" and one short sentence. "I am leaving the sandals with the counter. If you like, shall we meet once?" The person at the counter told me about it. Matsui-san has been coming here for years too. Matsui-san arrives at about ten past nine, and I go home at about nine. We have been in the same bath and have never met once. That one night, I was told, Matsui-san had come earlier than usual.

私わたしも紙かみを書かいて、番台ばんだいに預あずけた。そして、次つぎの日ひだけ、家いえを出でる時間じかんを十分じっぷん遅おそくした。銭湯せんとうを出でると、下駄箱げたばこの前まえで背せの高たかい人ひとがサンダルを履はいていた。「松井まついさんですか」と聞きくと、笑わらって足あしを見みせた。私わたしのと同おなじ色いろのサンダルだった。「サンダル、ありがとうございました」と言いって、それだけで終おわった。

I wrote a paper too and left it at the counter. Then, for the next day only, I made the time I leave the house ten minutes later. When I came out of the bath, a tall person was putting on sandals in front of the shoe lockers. When I asked, "Are you Matsui-san?", they laughed and showed me their feet. They were sandals the same colour as mine. "Thank you for the sandals," I said, and that was all there was to it.
