N4 consolidation story #270. The rubbish-station duty comes round to the narrator for the month of April. Crows open the bags before the truck. He buys a heavier net, and the bags are torn again the next collection morning; then he puts blocks on the net's corners. On the third morning he gets up at half past four and watches from the window, and the blocks have not moved. Patterns: 〜のに（目的）, 〜ことになる, 〜ましょう, 〜ていただけますか, 〜たらどうですか, 〜たことがある／ない.

In the building where I live, burnable rubbish is collected on Tuesday and Friday mornings every week. The duty for the rubbish station comes round once a year, and this year it fell to me for the one month of April. The duty is to put the net over at seven, and to clean the spot after the truck has come. On the first Tuesday morning, when I went down at seven, three bags were torn and rubbish had fallen on the road. Crows were lined up on the power line.

To protect the rubbish, I bought a heavier net than the one before. On Friday I went down at half past six and put the new net on. That was because I thought a heavy net would leave no gap. But the bags were already torn. I thought someone was putting rubbish out late at night.

同おなじ建物たてものの上田うえださんに話はなすと、カラスは軽かるい網あみなら隙間すきまから中なかに入はいるのだと言いわれた。「網あみの角かどにブロックを置おいたらどうですか。」私わたしはその日ひのうちにブロックを四つよっつ買かって、網あみの角かどに一つひとつずつ置おいた。

When I talked to Ueda-san from the same building, I was told that with a light net the crows get inside through the gap. "Why not put blocks on the corners of the net?" That same day I bought four blocks and put one on each corner of the net.

次つぎの火曜日かようび、私わたしは四時半よじはんに起おきた。窓まどを少すこし開あけると、風かぜが冷つめたかった。ゴミ置おき場ばは窓まどから見みえて、道みちの角かどまで視界しかいに入はいる。私わたしはそんな時間じかんに起おきたことがなかった。五時ごじ、上うえの階かいから早川はやかわさんが階段かいだんを降おりてきて、袋ふくろをゴミ置おき場ばに置おいて、そのまま歩あるいていった。ブロックは動うごいていなかった。網あみもそのままだった。袋ふくろだけが網あみの外そとにあった。

The next Tuesday, I got up at half past four. When I opened the window a little, the wind was cold. The rubbish station can be seen from the window, and the corner of the road is within view. I had never got up at that time of day. At five, Hayakawa-san came down the stairs from the floor above, put a bag at the rubbish station, and walked on. The blocks had not moved. The net was as it was too. Only the bag was outside the net.

私わたしは階段かいだんを降おりて、早川はやかわさんに追おいついた。「七時しちじまでゴミを出だすのを待まっていただけますか。」早川はやかわさんは、五時ごじに会社かいしゃへ行いくので待まてないと答こたえた。私わたしは少すこし考かんがえて言いった。「では、七時しちじまで袋ふくろを階段かいだんの下したに置おいておきましょう。私わたしが出だします。」次つぎの朝あさから、袋ふくろは階段かいだんの下したにあった。それから、道みちにゴミは落おちていない。

I went down the stairs and caught up with Hayakawa-san. "Could you wait until seven to put the rubbish out?" Hayakawa-san answered that going to the office at five made waiting impossible. I thought a little and said, "Then let's keep the bag under the stairs until seven. I will put it out." From the next morning, the bag was under the stairs. Since then, no rubbish has fallen on the road.
