At the beginning of August, Mori-san next door was going to stay at her daughter's house for two weeks. Five of her plant pots stand in a row in the corridor. I had helped her carry luggage once before, so I was asked to water them while she was away. "It's easy," she said.

It was indeed easy. It took fifteen minutes every evening to water the five pots, but fifteen minutes after work was no hardship. On the tenth day an overnight business trip came up. One day will be fine, I thought. What I did not know was that in the August heat they wither if you skip even two days.

The leaves had turned brown and fell off when I touched them with a finger. That evening I went to a home centre and bought a similar plant for 2,800 yen.

On the day Mori-san came home I took the newspapers out of her letterbox, where they had piled up. In the evening she brought sweets to thank me. Once I saw her face, lying was impossible. I told her about the biggest pot. She looked at it for a while and then said quietly, "I raised that one for ten years, so I would notice straight away." She would not take money. Instead she said, "Could I ask you again next August?" It was embarrassing, but no words of refusal came out. This year, too, I am watering the five pots.
