On a Saturday in August I took my sister's boy — my seven-year-old nephew — to the summer festival. He had wanted to keep goldfish for a long time. So in front of the station I went and said, "Today your uncle will win you one."
金魚 すくいの屋台 は人 が多 くて、前 が空 くのを十分 待 った。となりの屋台 で焼 いているとうもろこしのにおいがした。一回 二百円 。おじさんは「水 の中 でゆっくり動 かしてください水 の中 でゆっくり動 かしてください。 Move it slowly under the water, please.」と教 えてくれた。ポイは薄 い紙 で、大 きい金魚 はすくいにくい大 きい金魚 はすくいにくい。 Big goldfish are hard to scoop.。

There were a lot of people at the goldfish-scooping stall, and we waited ten minutes for a space at the front to open up. From the stall next door came the smell of corn being grilled. Two hundred yen a go. The man told me, "Move it slowly under the water." The scoop is thin paper, and big goldfish are hard to scoop.

My first go tore in ten seconds. I paid and had the scoop swapped for a new one. The more I hurried, the sooner the paper tore. By the time the seventh go was over I had spent 1,400 yen. My nephew waited behind me, eating strawberry shaved ice. I was in the mood to go home.

The man laughed and put out one new scoop. "This one is on me. Won't you have one more go?" This time I did not hurry, and looked only at the smallest goldfish. One of them went into the bag. The people around us cheered too. On the way home my nephew said he was hungry, so we bought corn from a stall and shared it between us.
金魚 は二日 で死 んでしまった。姉 の家 には道具 が何 もなかったからだ。私 は四千円 の水槽 を買 い、店 で金魚 を二匹 買 った。水槽 は私 の部屋 にある。三 か月 経 った今 も、私 は毎週 水 をきれいにしている毎週 水 をきれいにしている。 I make the water clean every week.。甥 は月 に一度 見 に来 るだけだ。

The goldfish died in two days. My sister's house had none of the equipment. I bought a 4,000-yen tank and two goldfish from a shop. The tank is in my room. Three months on, I still clean the water every week. My nephew comes to look at them about once a month.
