A classmate the narrator has not seen for seven years writes to ask him to the river fireworks, and they agree to meet under the stairs of the second bridge at half past seven. The crowd is thicker than he expected, the phone will not connect, and the battery dies before eight. Patterns: 〜ぐらい／くらい, 〜みたいだ, 〜間に, 〜かどうか, 〜まま, 〜たところ.

A message came from Soma-san, a classmate from high school, for the first time in seven years: would I watch the river fireworks with them in August? Every year I had only ever watched distant fireworks from the window at home, so I replied at once that I would come. We decided to meet at half past seven, under the stairs of the second bridge. I was a little worried about whether we would manage to meet in the crowd on the night of the fireworks.

夕方ゆうがたまで仕事しごとをして、七時しちじに駅えきに着ついたら、改札かいさつから外そとに出でるまでに十分じゅっぷんかかった。道みちの両側りょうがわに屋台やたいが並ならんでいて、浴衣ゆかたの人ひとが多おおかった。橋はしまでは二百にひゃくメートルぐらいの道みちだが、人ひとごみの中なかでは思おもうように進すすめなかった。七時二十五分しちじにじゅうごふんに、着つきましたと相馬そうまさんにメッセージを送おくった。返事へんじはなかった。

I worked until early evening, and when I reached the station at seven it took ten minutes just to get out through the ticket gate. Stalls lined both sides of the road and there were a lot of people in yukata. It was about a two-hundred-metre walk to the bridge, but in the crowd I could not move forward the way I wanted to. At seven twenty-five I sent Soma-san a message saying I had arrived. There was no reply.

七時半しちじはんに花火はなびが始はじまった。橋はしの階段かいだんの下したで、立たったまま待まった。背中せなかを汗あせが流ながれた。花火はなびが上あがっている間あいだに、何度なんども電話でんわをかけたが、つながらなかった。人ひとが多おおい場所ばしょでは電波でんぱが弱よわくなるみたいだ。何度なんども画面がめんを見みたので電池でんちが減へり、八時はちじ前まえに電源でんげんが落おちた。

The fireworks began at half past seven. I waited standing up, under the stairs of the bridge. Sweat ran down my back. While the fireworks were going up I rang several times, but the call would not connect. In a place with a lot of people the reception seems to get weak. I looked at the screen so many times that the battery ran down, and before eight the phone went dead.

それでも私わたしはその場所ばしょを動うごかなかった。相馬そうまさんもこの階段かいだんを探さがしているだろうと思おもったからだ。最後さいごの花火はなびが終おわって、人ひとが帰かえり始はじめても、五分ごふんほどそこに残のこった。バス停ていには、バスを待まつ人ひとの列れつができていた。川かわのほうから、花火はなびの煙けむりのにおいが流ながれてきた。

Even so I did not move from that spot. It was because I thought Soma-san must be looking for these stairs too. When the last of the fireworks ended and people began to go home, I stayed there about five minutes longer. At the bus stop a queue had formed of people waiting for a bus. From the direction of the river the smell of the fireworks smoke came drifting over.

家いえに帰かえって充電じゅうでんしたところ、七時四十分しちじよんじゅっぷんに送おくられたメッセージが届とどいた。「橋はしが通行止つうこうどめになって、渡わたれませんでした。反対はんたいの岸きしにいます。」相馬そうまさんは川かわの向むこうで、同おなじ花火はなびを見みていたのだ。私わたしは誰だれもいない川原かわらの写真しゃしんを送おくって、九月くがつの平日へいじつに喫茶店きっさてんで会あいませんかと書かいた。返事へんじはすぐに来きた。

When I got home and charged the phone, a message sent at seven forty came through. "The bridge was closed and I could not get across. I am on the opposite bank." Soma-san had been on the far side of the river, watching the same fireworks. I sent a photograph of the empty riverbed and wrote asking whether we might meet at a coffee shop on a weekday in September. The reply came straight back.
