Last Tuesday a middle-school boy was standing in front of me. He took some change out of his wallet and was counting it in front of the ticket machine. Then he moved aside without buying a ticket. He must be short of money, I thought. I put in a five-hundred-yen coin, bought a ticket for plain udon and handed it to him. I was thanked in a small voice, so I went ahead of him and took a seat in the shop.

What surprised me was the next morning. That middle-school boy was waiting in front of the shop. In his palm were three hundred-yen coins and one fifty-yen coin. That day the machine had swallowed one of his hundred-yen coins and he had only gone to tell the shop staff, he explained. He had had enough money.
私 は受 け取 らなかった。いいですよ、気 にしないでくださいと言 った。するとその子 は、受 け取 っていただけますか受 け取 っていただけますか could you please accept it?と言 って、手 を下 げなかった。二回 断 ったあと、その子 は券売機 に三百五十円 を入 れて、かけうどんのボタンを押 した。そして、その券 を私 の手 に置 いて、走 って行 った。

I did not accept it. It's fine, don't worry about it, I said. At that the boy said, could you please accept it, and did not lower his hand. After I refused twice, he put three hundred and fifty yen into the ticket machine and pressed the button for plain udon. Then he put the ticket into my hand and ran off.
その朝 、私 は家 でパンを食 べてきていた。それでも二杯目 のうどんを食 べた。正直 に言 うと、味 はよく分 からなかった。親切 のつもりだったが、あの子 は困 っていなかったのだ。店 の人 は、あの機械 は月 に一度 ぐらい百円玉 を飲 み込 むんですよと笑 った。あの朝 から、あの子 は毎朝 私 より先 に店 にいる。おはようございますと言 われるおはようございますと言 われる I am told good morning。それだけだ。

That morning I had already eaten bread at home. Even so I ate a second bowl of udon. To be honest, I could not really taste it. I had meant it as a kindness, but that boy had not been in trouble at all. The shop man laughed and said that machine swallows a hundred-yen coin about once a month. Since that morning the boy has been at the shop before me every day. I am told good morning. That is all.
