Near my office there is a small stand-and-eat soba shop. For twelve years I have gone in at least twice a week. You buy a ticket from the machine out front and eat the soba standing up as it comes. There are no seats. At a rushed lunchtime, eating standing up is faster than sitting down, and that helps.

Last week a notice appeared at the entrance. The characters were small and hard to read. Up close, it said: "Closing on 31 August." The old man who owns the place has kept it going for over thirty years. So this day had finally come, I thought.

What I like best at this shop is the broth. It is slightly sweet and dark in colour. It was written up in a magazine once, but the owner only ever said, "We're nothing special." If you went in the evening, sometimes the soba had already sold out.
最後 の日 、私 は昼休 みに十分 早 く会社 を出 た。せっかくの日 なので、お礼 に小 さな箱 の菓子 を持 っていった。常連 らしい人 が十人 ぐらい三分 ぐらいで食 べる。 I eat it in about three minutes.並 んでいて、みんな同 じような顔 をしている。

On the last day I left the office ten minutes early for lunch. Since it was that kind of day, I took a small box of sweets as a thank-you. About ten people who looked like regulars were queuing, all of them wearing more or less the same expression.

My soba came. The broth was the same colour as always. I ate it while it was hot, then held out the box and said, "Thank you for all these years." The owner made a slightly awkward face and laughed. "I'm not quitting, you know. It's the building — they're rebuilding it." In October, apparently, he is opening near the next station.
新 しい店 は少 し狭 いが、椅子 が六 つ入 るらしい。「今度 は座 って食 べてください」と店主 は言 った。私 は菓子 の箱 を返 してもらおうとしたが、店主 は受 け取 ったまま「十月 にまた」と言 った。閉店 の貼 り紙 を、私 は読 み間違 えていたわけではない。ただ、終 わりだと決 めていたのは私 のほうだった。

The new place is a little narrower, but it seems six chairs will fit. "Next time, please sit down to eat," the owner said. I tried to get the box of sweets back off him, but he kept hold of it and said, "See you in October." I had not misread the closing notice. It was only that the one who had decided it was the end was me.
