N4 consolidation story #248. A thirty-two-year-old joins a "beginners welcome" futsal group, finds nobody there is a beginner, and is put in goal at half time. Patterns: 〜ませんか, 〜そうだ(伝聞), 〜ばかり, 〜てください, 〜くする・にする, 〜ましょう.

三十二歳さんじゅうにさいの私わたしは、高校こうこうを出でてから運動うんどうをしていない。アプリで「初心者しょしんしゃ歓迎かんげい」というフットサルの募集ぼしゅうを見みつけた。「木曜もくようの夜よる、一緒いっしょにやりませんか」と書かいてある。人数にんずうが足たりないらしい。私わたしは「初心者しょしんしゃです」と正直しょうじきに書かいて、申もうし込こんだ。

At thirty-two, I have not exercised since I left high school. On an app I found a futsal group advertising "beginners welcome." "Thursday nights — would you like to play with us?" it said. Apparently they were short on numbers. I wrote honestly that I was a beginner, and applied.

体育館たいいくかんの入口いりぐちで上着うわぎを脱ぬいだとき、中なかの人ひとたちが見みえた。ボールを足あしの上うえで何度なんども止とめている。あとで聞きくと、みんな高校こうこうの部活ぶかつでサッカーをしていたそうだ。つまり全員ぜんいんが経験者けいけんしゃだ。「初心者しょしんしゃ歓迎かんげい」の意味いみが違ちがったらしい。

As I took off my jacket at the gym entrance, I could see the people inside. They were stopping the ball on their feet over and over. When I asked later, apparently they had all played football in a high-school club. In other words, every one of them had experience. "Beginners welcome" seemed to mean something else here.

前半ぜんはんの二十分にじゅっぷん、私わたしはボールを追おいかけてばかりいた。さわったのは二回にかいだけで、一回いっかいは相手あいてに渡わたしてしまった。汗あせが目めに入はいる。使つかっていない筋肉きんにくが動うごかない。休やすみになったら帰かえろうという気分きぶんだった。

For the twenty minutes of the first half, I did nothing but chase the ball. I touched it exactly twice, and one of those I handed straight to the other team. Sweat ran into my eyes. Muscles I never use would not move. By the break I was in the mood to go home.

ところが休やすみのとき、キーパーをしていた人ひとが仕事しごとの電話でんわを受うけて、先さきに帰かえることになった。キャプテンが私わたしのところに来きて言いった。「後半こうはん、キーパーをお願ねがいできますか。ボールが来きてもこわがらないでください。立たっているだけでいいですから」そして、みんなに「では、始はじめましょう」と声こえをかけた。

But during the break, the man playing goalkeeper took a work call and had to leave early. The captain came over to me. "Could you take goal for the second half? Even if the ball comes, please don't be afraid. Just standing there is enough." Then he called to everyone, "All right, let's begin."

ゴールの前まえに立たって、私わたしは体からだを大おおきくした。守まもることだけ考かんがえていればいい。八分はっぷんほどして、相手あいてのシュートが真まっ直すぐ飛とんできた。目めを閉とじてしまったが、ボールは私わたしの左足ひだりあしに当あたって外そとに出でた。体育館たいいくかんの中なかが急きゅうに大おおきな声こえでいっぱいになった。

Standing in front of the goal, I made my body big. All I had to think about was defending. About eight minutes in, a shot came flying straight at me. I closed my eyes, but the ball hit my left foot and went out. The gym suddenly filled with shouting.

試合しあいは三対さんたい八はちで負まけた。私わたしが止とめたのはあの一本いっぽんだけだ。それでも駅えきまで歩あるく間あいだ、キャプテンが「来週らいしゅうも来きますよね」と言いった。初はじめての体験たいけんだった。経験者けいけんしゃばかりのこのチームで、私わたしはまだ一番いちばん下手へただが、「行いきます」と答こたえた。

We lost the match three to eight. That one shot was the only thing I stopped. Even so, on the walk to the station the captain said, "You're coming next week too, right?" It was a first-time experience for me. On a team of nothing but experienced players I am still the worst, but I answered, "I'll be there."
