Next week I renew my ID card, and I need a photo for it. For the last three months I have been too busy to go to the hair salon, and when I look in the mirror my hair is a mess. A salon costs about four thousand yen. So I thought I would cut it myself. It was only a matter of making it a little shorter, I figured, so it would be easy.

On Saturday morning I picked up the scissors and started at the front. My wife saw me in the middle of cutting. She told me I ought to stop, but I could not leave it alone and kept going to the end. Thirty minutes later, in the mirror, the right side and the left side were different lengths. My wife said nothing at all and walked out of the room.

On Monday I went to the photo shop with my hat still on. It was midday on a weekday and I was the only customer. The man at the shop told me to take my hat off before the photo was taken. Those are the rules, apparently, so there was nothing to be done. When I took the hat off, he smiled a little and said, why don't you have the barber next door fix it for you.
床屋 は五分 で終 わった。料金 は千円 だった。恥 ずかしくて何 も話 せなかったが、床屋 の人 は「この一 か月 で、同 じ理由 のお客 さんは五人 目 ですよ」と言 った。私 だけではなかったらしい。写真 の中 の顔 は、思 っていたより普通 だった。三千円 は残 ったし、気分 は悪 くない。

The barber took five minutes. The charge was one thousand yen. I was too embarrassed to say anything, but the barber said, you're the fifth customer this month who has come in for the same reason. So it was not only me, it seems. In the photo my face looked more ordinary than I had expected. I was still three thousand yen ahead, and I do not feel bad about it.
