On Friday, work finished early. That is rare on a weekday. Since I was out early for once, I decided to go home while it was still light and relax in my room. The train was empty too, and I was in a good mood.

When I arrived at my apartment and looked in my bag, the key was not there. Not in my pockets either. Just then I remembered that I had come out that morning leaving the key sitting on my desk. My door is the type that locks automatically. I am the king of leaving things behind, I thought to myself.

I phoned the management company. But I learned that they do not answer the phone after six o'clock. The clock said exactly ten past six. On top of that, my phone battery was at nine percent. I wanted to ask someone "What should I do?", but there was nobody in the hallway.

The landlord should have a spare key, but his phone number is written in a notebook inside my room. I checked the mailbox too, but all that was in it was advertising. I sat against the hallway wall and watched my phone screen go dark.
一時間 ほどたったころ、隣 の田中 さんが買 い物 から帰 ってきた。事情 を話 すと、「中 で待 ちなさい」と言 ってくれた。私 は「充電 させていただいてもいいですかここで待 ってもいいですか。 May I wait here?」と聞 いた。田中 さんは笑 って、お茶 も出 してくれた。

About an hour later, Ms. Tanaka from next door came back from shopping. When I explained the situation, she said, "Wait inside." I asked, "May I charge my phone?" Ms. Tanaka laughed, and served me tea as well.
田中 さんは十五年 ここに一人 で住 んでいるそうだ。大家 さんの番号 も知 っていて、すぐに電話 してくれた。合鍵 が届 いたのは八時 だった。静 かな夜 の予定 はなくなったが、隣 の人 の話 を一時間 聞 いた。来週 、お茶 を持 っていこうと思 う。

Ms. Tanaka has apparently lived here alone for fifteen years. She knew the landlord's number too, and called him right away. The spare key arrived at eight o'clock. My plan for a quiet evening was gone, but I listened to my neighbour's stories for an hour. Next week I think I'll bring her some tea.
