夏休なつやすみの工作こうさくを、九月くがつの最初さいしょの月曜日げつようびに出だすことになった。息子むすこの健太けんたは七月しちがつから「鳥とりの巣箱すばこを作つくる」と言いっていた。日曜日にちようびの夕方ゆうがたになって、まだ何なにも始はじまっていないことに気きがついたのは私わたしのほうだった。

The summer holiday craft project was to be handed in on the first Monday of September. Since July my son Kenta had been saying he would make a birdhouse. It was I who noticed, early on Sunday evening, that nothing had been started.

店みせに行いけば巣箱すばこのセットが売うっていると思おもっていたが、工作こうさくの紙かみには「買かったものを組くみ立たてるだけのものは出ださないこと」と書かいてあった。木きは自分じぶんで切きるということを、その時ときまで知しらなかった。ホームセンターに着ついたのは六時十分ろくじじゅっぷんで、入口いりぐちのシャッターは下おりていた。

I had assumed that a birdhouse kit would be on sale at the shop, but the craft handout said, "Do not hand in anything that is merely an assembled kit." Until that moment I did not know that you had to cut the wood yourself. I reached the home centre at ten past six, and the shutter over the entrance was down.

家いえに帰かえって、車庫しゃこから古ふるい板いたを三枚さんまい出だした。棚たなを作つくった時ときの残のこりだ。一番いちばん困こまったのは板いたの長ながさだ。箱はこを作つくるのに、三十センチさんじゅっセンチの板いたが六枚ろくまいいる。うちにあるのこぎりは刃はが古ふるくて切きれなかったので、隣となりの佐々木ささきさんに「のこぎりを使つかわせてください」と頼たのんだ。

Back at home, I took three old boards out of the garage — left over from when I built a shelf. The thing that troubled me most was the length of the boards. To make a box you need six thirty-centimetre pieces. Our own saw had an old blade and would not cut, so I asked Sasaki-san next door, "Please let me use your saw."

佐々木ささきさんは手伝てつだうと言いってくれたが、私わたしは断ことわった。健太けんたが自分じぶんで作つくる工作こうさくだからだ。夜よるの車庫しゃこで切きり始はじめたが、線せんのとおりに真まっ直すぐ切きれない。二枚目にまいめも曲まがった。汗あせが目めに入はいって、声こえが大おおきくなった。その時とき、健太けんたが「じゃあ、こうしましょう」と言いって、曲まがった板いたを屋根やねのところに置おいた。

Sasaki-san offered to help, but I refused, because it was Kenta's craft project and he had to make it himself. I started cutting in the garage at night, but I could not cut straight along the line. The second piece came out bent too. Sweat got into my eyes and my voice rose. Just then Kenta said, "All right, let's do it this way," and put the bent board where the roof went.

The birdhouse we finished at eleven had a slanted roof and a gap along one side. On Monday there were plenty of skilful pieces lined up on the classroom shelf. Kenta put ours right in the middle without minding at all, called his friends over, and pointed at the crooked parts with his finger while he explained them. I was surprised to find that the only one who had thought it embarrassing was me. Next year I think I will invite Kenta out to the garage in June.
