Signing Up for a Phone Plan — N4 Consolidation (Story #42)

Switching to a new phone plan — comparing plans, the monthly charge, and the documents you need to sign the contract. It recycles six N4 patterns: 〜にする (decide on), 〜と思う (I think), 〜みたい (seems like), 〜んですが (softened opener), 〜たらいいですか (what should I do?), and 〜たがる (someone wants to). Reuse these words: 契約, 料金, プラン, 店員, 書類, 身分証明書.

Grammar

〜にする

decide on ~ / go with ~ / I'll have ~

noun + にする

〜と思う

I think (that) ~ — states an opinion/guess

plain form + と思う

明日あしたは晴はれると思おもう。

I think it will clear up tomorrow.

〜みたい

seems like ~ / looks like ~ (a guess from what you see)

plain form / noun + みたいだ

外そとは寒さむいみたいだ。

It looks like it's cold outside.

〜んですが

~, but … (softens a request or leads in)

Before you read — make your own sentences

Use 〜にする: say which plan (or drink/dish) you'll go with — 「私は◯◯にします。」
Use 〜んですが: politely open a request to staff — 「プランを変えたいんですが…」
Use 〜と思う: give your opinion about a plan — 「Bプランのほうがいいと思います。」

The staff member explained the various plans to me. Plan A's charge seems cheap, but it has little data. Plan B's monthly charge is a little higher, but you can use a lot of data.

私わたしは二ふたつのプランを比くらべた。妹いもうとも新あたらしいスマホを持もちたがっているので、どちらがいいか、なかなか決きめられなかった。

For the contract you need documents. The staff said, "We need a photo ID." I had one, so the contract was done that day. Now my monthly charge is cheaper than before, and I'm happy.
