Borrowing Books at the Library — N4 Consolidation (Story #41)

A calm trip to the town library — making a user card, borrowing and returning by the due date, renewing, and keeping quiet. It recycles six N4 patterns you already know: 〜し (listing reasons), 〜方（かた）(how to do), 〜と (natural result), 〜までに (by a deadline), 〜予定だ (plan to), and 〜ておく (do in advance). Reuse these words in a library roleplay: 図書館, 借りる, 返す, 期限, 延長, 受付.

Before you read — make your own sentences

Use 〜までに: say by when you'll return the books — 「本は◯曜日までに返します。」
Use 〜方（かた）: ask how to do something at the library — 「本の借り方を教えてください。」
Use 〜ておく: say what you'll do in advance — 「読みたい本を予約しておきます。」

私わたしは本ほんを読よむのが好すきだ。町まちの図書館としょかんによく行いく。図書館としょかんは静しずかだし、お金かねもかからないし、とてもいい場所ばしょだ。

I love reading, and I often go to my town's library. The library is quiet and doesn't cost anything, so it's a really nice place.

To borrow books, you first have to make a library user card. I asked at the reception desk how to borrow books.

受付うけつけの人ひとが教おしえてくれた。カードを機械きかいに入いれると、名前なまえと借かりる本ほんのリストが画面がめんに出でる。一度いちどに10冊さつまで借かりられる。

訳 English

The person at the desk explained it to me. When you put the card into the machine, your name and the list of books you're borrowing appear on the screen. You can borrow up to 10 books at a time.

借かりた本ほんは、返却へんきゃく期限きげんまでに返かえさなければならない。今回こんかいは、来週らいしゅうの月曜日げつようびに返かえす予定よていだ。

Books you've borrowed have to be returned by the return due date. This time, I plan to return them next Monday.

もし期限きげんまでに読よみ終おわらなかったら、一回いっかいだけ延長えんちょうすることができる。人気にんきの本ほんはすぐになくなってしまうので、読よみたい本ほんは早はやめに予約よやくしておくといい。

If you can't finish reading by the due date, you can renew just once. But popular books disappear quickly, so it's a good idea to reserve the books you want to read early.

図書館としょかんの中なかでは、みんな静しずかに本ほんを読よんでいる。だから、私わたしも小ちいさい声こえで話はなす。図書館としょかんは本当ほんとうにいい場所ばしょだ。これからも、たくさんの本ほんを借かりに行いきたい。

Inside the library, everyone reads quietly. So I keep my voice down too. The library really is a wonderful place. I want to keep coming to borrow lots of books.
