N4 consolidation story #71. The narrator goes to the post office to send a package to a friend who lives far away, asking the clerk about shipping methods, cost, and delivery time. Recycles known N4 grammar and post-office vocabulary. Patterns: 〜なければならない, 〜たらどうですか, 〜ばいい, 〜かどうか, 〜てもらう, 〜まで.

I wanted to send a package to a friend who lives far away, so I went to the post office in front of the station. First, I had to write the address on the box.

窓口まどぐちの店員てんいんさんに荷物にもつを渡わたして、重おもさを量はかってもらった。店員てんいんさんは「少すこし重おもいので、料金りょうきんは千せん円えんです」と言いった。

訳 English

I handed the package to the clerk at the counter and had them weigh it. The clerk said, 'It's a little heavy, so the fee is one thousand yen.'

私わたしは、金曜日きんようびまでに届とどくかどうか聞きいた。店員てんいんさんは「普通ふつうだと三日みっかかかりますが、急いそぐなら速達そくたつで送おくったらどうですか」と教おしえてくれた。

訳 English

I asked whether it would arrive by Friday or not. The clerk told me, 'By regular mail it takes three days, but if you're in a hurry, why don't you send it by express mail?'

速達そくたつなら明日あした届とどくそうだが、料金りょうきんが高たかい。金曜日きんようびまでに着つけば問題もんだいないので、普通ふつうで送おくればいいと思おもった。

訳 English

By express mail it would apparently arrive tomorrow, but the fee is expensive. Since there's no problem as long as it arrives by Friday, I thought I might as well send it by regular mail.

普通ふつうで送おくることにして、料金りょうきんを払はらった。切手きっても何枚なんまいか買かわせてもらった。荷物にもつが無事ぶじに友ともだちに届とどけばいいなと思おもいながら、郵便局ゆうびんきょくを出でた。

訳 English

I decided to send it by regular mail and paid the fee. I also had them let me buy a few stamps. Hoping the package would reach my friend safely, I left the post office.
