N4 consolidation story #70. The narrator has just moved into a new apartment and goes to greet the neighbors, bringing towels as a small gift. Recycles known N4 grammar and everyday moving/greeting vocabulary. Patterns: 〜たばかり, 〜ておく, 〜ていただく, 〜ため, 〜ながら, 〜てしまう.

just did ~; only just happened

動詞た形＋ばかり

先週せんしゅう、引ひっ越こしてきたばかりだ。

I just moved in last week.

〜ておく

do ~ in advance; do ~ for later

動詞て形＋おく

部屋へやを掃除そうじしておく。

I'll clean the room in advance.

〜ていただく

humbly receive the favor of ~ (someone does ~ for me)

動詞て形＋いただく

大家おおやさんに教おしえていただいた。

The landlord kindly taught me (I humbly received the teaching).

〜ため

for the sake of; because of

動詞辞書形／名詞の＋ため

挨拶あいさつのために隣となりへ行いく。

I go next door for the purpose of greeting them.

while doing ~ (two actions at once)

Last week I just moved into a new apartment in this town. I still have a lot of belongings, and the room has ended up a little messy.

まず、近所きんじょへの挨拶あいさつのために、手土産てみやげを用意よういしておくことにした。何なにがいいか迷まよったが、みんなが使つかえる白しろいタオルを選えらんだ。

訳 English

First, for the sake of greeting the neighborhood, I decided to prepare a small gift in advance. I was unsure what would be good, but I chose white towels that everyone can use.

隣となりの部屋へやの人ひとに、タオルを渡わた渡わたしながら、「隣となりに越こしてきたばかりです。迷惑めいわくをかけるかもしれませんが、よろしくおねがいします」と笑わらいながら挨拶あいさつした。

訳 English

Handing a towel to the person in the room next door, I greeted them with a smile: 'I just moved in next door. I may cause you some trouble, but please be good to me.'

隣となりの人ひとはとても親切しんせつで、ゴミの出だし方かたやスーパーの場所ばしょを教おしえていただいた。大家おおやさんのことも紹介しょうかいしていただいて、とても助たすかった。

訳 English

The neighbor was very kind, and kindly taught me how to put out the trash and where the supermarket is. They also introduced me to the landlord, which was a big help.

部屋へやに帰かえってから、残のこりの荷物にもつを片付かたづ片付かたづけながら、隣となりの人ひとの名前なまえを忘わすれてしまったことに気きづいた。次つぎに会あったとき、もう一度いちど名前なまえを聞き聞きいておこうと思おもった。

訳 English

After returning to my room, while tidying up the rest of my belongings, I realized I had ended up forgetting the neighbor's name. I thought that next time I meet them, I'll make sure to ask their name once more.
