My First Time Cooking — N4 Reading Practice (Story #8)

Today's story is about cooking a meal for the very first time — buying ingredients, following a recipe, and a small failure. Here are the 10 grammar points (all new — none repeat from Story #7) and the vocab you'll meet.

Grammar

〜たことがある/ない

have / have never done ~ (past experience)

verb plain past (た) + ことがある

料理 りょうりつくったことがない。

I have never cooked.

〜し

~ and ~ (listing reasons, implies "and more")

plain form + し

やすいし、からだにもいいし。

It's cheap, and good for you (so…).

〜なら

if (it's the case that) ~ ; given that topic

noun / plain form + なら

料理 りょうりをするなら、レシピをて。

If you're going to cook, look at a recipe.

〜なければならない

must / have to ~ (obligation)

verb ない-form (drop い) + ければならない

材料 ざいりょうわなければならない。

I have to buy ingredients.

〜たほうがいい

had better ~ / it's better to ~ (advice)

verb plain past (た) + ほうがいい

レシピをたほうがいい。

You'd better look at the recipe.

〜すぎる

too much / over-do ~

verb stem / adj stem + すぎる

しおれすぎた。

I put in too much salt.

〜のに

although ~ (unexpected / disappointing result)

plain form + のに

レシピどおりにつくったのに、失敗 しっぱいした。

Even though I followed the recipe, I failed.

〜より〜のほうが

~ is more … than ~ (comparison)

A より B のほうが [adjective]

みせよりいえのほうがたのしい。

Home is more fun than the restaurant.

〜つもり

intend to / plan to ~

verb plain form + つもり

もう一度 いちどつくるつもりだ。

I intend to make it once more.

〜ば

if ~ (conditional; natural consequence)

verb -eba form (する→すれば, 練習する→練習すれば)

練習 れんしゅうすれば、上手 じょうずになる。

If you practice, you'll get good.

Before you read — make your own sentences

Until now, I had never once cooked a meal. But food you make yourself is cheap and good for your body, so today I'll try cooking for the first time.

まず、料理 りょうりをするなら材料 ざいりょうわなければなりません。スーパーで野菜 やさいとおにくいました。

First, if you're going to cook, you have to buy ingredients. I bought vegetables and meat at the supermarket.

料理 りょうりのレシピをたほうがいいので、スマホで調 しらべました。でも、わたしはしおれすぎました

It's better to look at a recipe, so I looked one up on my phone. But I added too much salt.

Even though I made it exactly according to the recipe, the taste was strange. My first dish is a failure.
