Grammar

〜ことになる

it's been decided that ~ (outside your control / arrangement)

verb plain (non-past) + ことになる

来月らいげつ転勤てんきんすることになりました。

It's been decided I'll transfer next month.

〜なければならない

have to ~ / must ~

verb ない-form (drop い) + ければならない

荷物にもつを片付かたづけなければなりません。

I have to tidy up my things.

〜たら

when ~ / if ~ (condition; then the next thing happens)

verb / adj た-form + ら

中なかを見みたら、びっくりしました。

When I looked inside, I was startled.

〜ことにする

decide to ~ (your own choice)

Next month, I'm going to move to a new apartment. My current place is far from work, so I'd been wanting to live somewhere closer for a long time. On weekends I'm busy preparing for the move.

まず荷物にもつを片付かたづけなければなりません。押入おしいれの中なかを見みたら、使つかっていないものがたくさんありました。「こんなに荷物にもつがあったのか」と驚おどろきました。もう要いらないものは捨すてることにしました。

First, I have to tidy up my belongings. When I looked inside the closet, there were tons of things I wasn't using. "Did I really have this much stuff?" I was surprised. I decided to throw away the things I no longer need.

一人ひとりで片付かたづけるのは大変たいへんなので、同僚どうりょうの石田いしださんに手伝てつだってもらいました。石田いしださんは「何なにを捨すてるか迷まよったら、一年いちねん使つかわなかったものは全部ぜんぶ捨すてた方ほうがいいよ」と教おしえてくれました。

訳 English

Tidying up alone is tough, so I had my colleague Ishida help me. Ishida told me, "If you can't decide what to throw out, it's best to toss everything you haven't used in a year."

引ひっ越こしの日ひ、朝あさから荷物にもつを箱はこに入いれて、トラックに運はこびました。石田いしださんがまた手伝てつだいに来きてくれました。重おもい荷物にもつは二人ふたりで運はこばなければなりませんでした。

訳 English

On moving day, from the morning I put my belongings into boxes and carried them to the truck. Ishida came to help again. The heavy things we had to carry between the two of us.

新あたらしいアパートに着ついて、ドアを開あけました。部屋へやは前まえより少すこし広ひろくて、窓まどからの景色けしきもきれいです。「準備じゅんびは大変たいへんだったけど、引ひっ越こしてよかった」と思おもいました。

訳 English

When I arrived at the new apartment and opened the door, the room was a little more spacious than before, and the view from the window is lovely too. "The preparation was hard, but I'm glad I moved," I thought.

荷物にもつを全部ぜんぶ運はこんだ後あと、お礼れいに石田いしださんと近ちかくの寿司屋すしやに行いきました。「手伝てつだってくれて、ありがとう。」「いいよ、今度こんど新あたらしい部屋へやに遊あそびに行いくね。」

訳 English

After carrying all the luggage, as a thank-you I went with Ishida to a nearby sushi restaurant. "Thanks for helping me." "No problem — I'll come hang out at your new place sometime."
