A short everyday story about leaving an umbrella on the train, going to the station's lost-and-found, describing it, filling in a form, having the staff check, and getting it back the next day. Recycles six N4 grammar points: 〜まま, 〜られる, 〜ところ, 〜なくなる, 〜つもりだ, and 〜ばかり.

On a rainy day, I got off the train leaving my umbrella inside. After I left the station, I realized I had just dropped my umbrella.

その傘かさは先週せんしゅう買かったばかりの青あおい傘かさで、なくすと雨あめの日ひに困こまらなくなるように、はやく見みつけたかった。ちゃんと見みつけられるか心配しんぱいだった。

訳 English

That umbrella was a blue one I had just bought last week, so I wanted to find it quickly, so that I wouldn't be troubled on rainy days. I was worried about whether it could really be found.

私わたしは駅えきの忘わすれ物ものセンターへ行いった。係かかりの人ひとが用紙ようしを渡わたしてくれるところだった。「傘かさの特徴とくちょうと色いろをここに書かいてください」と言いわれた。

訳 English

I went to the station's lost-and-found center. The clerk was just about to hand me a form. "Please write the umbrella's features and color here," they said.

私わたしは用紙ようしに「青あおい色いろで、長ながい傘かさ」と書かいているところで、係かかりの人ひとが「同おなじ傘かさが届とどけられていますよ」と教おしえてくれた。

訳 English

Just as I was writing on the form, "blue in color, a long umbrella," the clerk told me, "An identical umbrella has been turned in."

でも、その傘かさが本当ほんとうに私わたしの物ものか、すぐには分わからなくなった。係かかりの人ひとが傘かさの特徴とくちょうを調しらべているところだったので、私わたしは少すこし待まった。

訳 English

But I suddenly couldn't tell right away whether that umbrella was really mine. The clerk was in the middle of checking the umbrella's features, so I waited a little.

傘かさは今日きょうはまだ受うけ取とれなかったので、明日あしたまた駅えきに来きて受うけ取とるつもりだ。次つぎからは傘かさを置おいたまま電車でんしゃを降おりないように気きをつけるつもりだ。

訳 English

Since I couldn't pick up the umbrella today yet, I intend to come to the station again tomorrow and receive it. From next time, I intend to be careful not to get off the train leaving my umbrella behind.
