This consolidation story recycles N4 grammar you already know — 〜てもらう (have someone do it for me), 〜方 (how to ~), 〜ながら (while doing), 〜たら (once ~ happens), 〜と (natural result), and 〜すぎる (too much) — plus everyday kitchen vocab like 材料, 玉ねぎ, 混ぜる, 沸騰, 弱火, and 味見.

今日きょうは母ははに料理りょうりを教おしえてもらいます。作つくるのはカレーです。私わたしはカレーが大好だいすきですが、自分じぶんで作つくったことは一度いちどもありません。だから、カレーの作つくり方かたを母ははに習ならいます。母ははは「そんなに難むずかしくないよ。一緒いっしょに作つくりましょう」と言いってくれました。まず、材料ざいりょうをテーブルに並ならべました。

Today my mother is going to teach me how to cook. What we're making is curry. I love curry, but I've never once made it myself. So I'm learning how to make curry from my mother. She said, 'It's not that hard — let's make it together.' First, we laid out the ingredients on the table.

最初さいしょに、玉たまねぎを切きります。私わたしが「玉たまねぎはどう切きればいいの?」と聞きくと、母ははは切きり方かたを見みせてくれました。「小ちいさく切きると、早はやく火ひが通とおるよ」と教おしえてくれました。私わたしは母ははのやり方かたを見みながら、ゆっくり玉たまねぎを切きりました。

First, we cut the onion. When I asked, 'How should I cut the onion?', my mother showed me how to cut it. She taught me, 'If you cut it small, it cooks through faster.' Watching my mother's technique, I slowly cut the onion.

次つぎに、鍋なべに油あぶらを入いれて、玉たまねぎを炒いためます。母ははは「強火つよびで炒いためすぎると焦こげるから、気きをつけてね」と言いいました。私わたしはテレビを見みながら炒いためていたので、少すこし焦こがしてしまいました。母ははは笑わらって「大丈夫だいじょうぶ、大丈夫だいじょうぶ」と言いってくれました。

Next, we put oil in the pot and stir-fried the onion. My mother said, 'If you stir-fry it too much on high heat, it'll burn, so be careful.' I was frying while watching TV, so I burned it a little. My mother laughed and said, 'It's fine, it's fine.'

玉たまねぎがやわらかくなったら、鍋なべに水みずを入いれます。母ははは「お湯ゆが沸騰ふっとうしたら、肉にくと野菜やさいを入いれてね」と教おしえてくれました。しばらくすると、お湯ゆがぐつぐつと沸騰ふっとうしました。私わたしは「沸騰ふっとうしたら、次つぎはどうするの?」と母ははに聞ききました。

Once the onion got soft, we added water to the pot. My mother taught me, 'When the water comes to a boil, add the meat and vegetables.' After a while, the water boiled, bubbling away. I asked my mother, 'Once it's boiling, what do I do next?'

それから、火ひを弱火よわびにして、30分ぷんぐらい煮にます。私わたしが「味あじはどうやってつけるの?」と聞きくと、母はははカレーのルウを入いれました。そして、スプーンでよく混まぜました。塩しおの量りょうも母ははに教おしえてもらいました。「入いれすぎると、しょっぱくなるよ」と母ははは言いいました。

Then we turned the heat to low and simmered it for about 30 minutes. When I asked, 'How do I add flavor?', my mother put in the curry roux. And she stirred it well with a spoon. She also taught me how much salt to use. 'If you add too much, it gets salty,' my mother said.

最後さいごに、私わたしは味見あじみをしてみました。スプーンで一口ひとくち食たべると、とてもおいしかったです。自分じぶんで作つくったカレーは、いつもより特別とくべつな味あじがしました。母ははに「料理りょうりは楽たのしいでしょう?」と聞きかれて、私わたしは「うん、また教おしえて!」と答こたえました。今度こんどは一人ひとりで作つくってみるつもりです。

Finally, I tried tasting it. When I took one bite with the spoon, it was very delicious. The curry I'd made myself tasted more special than usual. When my mother asked, 'Cooking is fun, isn't it?', I answered, 'Yeah — teach me again!' Next time I intend to try making it by myself.
