A night at karaoke with friends: reserving a room ahead of time, learning how the song machine works, picking songs for each other, and losing track of time. It recycles everyday N4 grammar — 〜ておく (doing something in advance), 〜と (a natural if/when consequence), 〜てあげる (doing a favor for someone), 〜ながら (doing two things at once), 〜そうだ (looks/seems ~ from appearance), and 〜てしまう (ending up ~ing, often with a bit of regret or surprise) — with karaoke vocabulary you can reuse in real life.

Grammar

do ~ in advance / do ~ and leave it that way (preparation)

Before the trip, I bought the tickets in advance.

〜と

when / if ~ (a natural, automatic consequence — this action always leads to that result)

verb plain non-past + と

〜てあげる

do ~ for someone (I do a favor for someone else)

verb て-form + あげる

妹いもうとに本ほんを読よんであげました。

I read a book for my younger sister.

〜ながら

while ~ing (two actions done at once, by the same person)

verb ます-stem + ながら

音楽おんがくを聞ききながら、勉強べんきょうします。

I study while listening to music.

〜そうだ

looks / seems ~ (based on appearance, what you can see)

い-adjective stem / な-adjective stem / verb ます-stem + そう

この料理りょうりはおいしそうです。

This dish looks delicious.

〜てしまう

end up ~ing / do ~ completely (often with a nuance of regret or surprise)

verb て-form + しまう

電車でんしゃの中なかで財布さいふを落おとしてしまいました。

When we got to the shop, the staff told us, "If you enter the number of the song you want to sing into this machine, it shows up on the screen."

First, I sang one song I liked. Then my friend Lin picked up the mic and chose the next song for me, one that would suit me.

リンさんは歌うたがとても上手じょうずで、みんな盛もり上あがりました。彼女かのじょはいつも飲のみ物ものを飲のみながら、楽たのしそうに歌うたいます。

Lin is really good at singing, and everyone got excited. She always sings looking like she's having fun, drinking her drink as she goes.

We sang song after song in turns, and before we knew it, the time was up. "I want to sing more," someone said, so we decided to extend by thirty minutes.

延長えんちょうした部屋へやでも、みんなでにぎやかな曲きょくを歌うたったり、踊おどったりしました。声こえが少すこし枯かれましたが、とても楽たのしかったです。

Even in the extended room time, we all sang and danced to lively songs together. Our voices got a little hoarse, but it was a lot of fun.

最後さいごに会計かいけいをすると、一人ひとり当あたりの値段ねだんはそんなに高たかくなくて安心あんしんしました。また今度こんど、みんなで行いこうと約束やくそくしました。

When we settled the bill at the end, the price per person wasn't too high, which was a relief. We promised to all go again sometime.
