N4 consolidation story #252. For half a year the narrator has dreaded the English half of a weekly language exchange, and when he finally says so, his partner turns out to have been dreading it too. Patterns: 〜ませんか, 〜ようにする, 〜たところ, 〜ということ, 〜ましょうか, 〜と言ってもいい.

半年前はんとしまえ、隣となりのビルで働はたらいているダニエルさんに、「毎週まいしゅう、言葉ことばの交換こうかんをしませんか」と言いわれた。サイトで登録とうろくしたのではなく、駅えきの本屋ほんやで話はなしかけられたのが始はじまりだ。木曜日もくようびの夜よる、駅前えきまえの喫茶店きっさてんで会あうことにした。初はじめの三十分さんじゅっぷんは英語えいご、後あとの三十分さんじゅっぷんは日本語にほんご。

Six months ago Daniel, who works in the building next to mine, asked me whether I would like to do a language exchange every week. It did not start from a website — he spoke to me at the bookstore in the station. We decided to meet on Thursday evenings at the coffee shop in front of the station. The first thirty minutes in English, the last thirty in Japanese.

私わたしの英語えいごはひどい。単語たんごが出でてこないし、発音はつおんも通つうじない。前まえの日ひに文ぶんを三みっつ用意よういして、できるだけ英語えいごで話はなすようにしていた。それでも三十分さんじゅっぷんで汗あせをかく。日本語にほんごの三十分さんじゅっぷんだけは楽たのしくて、話はなしが盛り上がるもりあがる。

My English is terrible. The words do not come, and my pronunciation does not get through. The day before, I would prepare three sentences and make a point of speaking in English as much as I could. Even so, thirty minutes leaves me sweating. Only the thirty minutes of Japanese was enjoyable, and the conversation would liven up.

先週せんしゅう、雨あめで店みせが空すいていた。「英語えいごの時間じかんをやめたい」と正直しょうじきに言いってみたところ、ダニエルさんは驚おどろいた顔かおをして、「よかった」と言いった。彼かれは日本語にほんごの練習れんしゅうがしたかっただけで、半年間はんとしかん、私わたしに英語えいごを話はなさせて申もうし訳わけないと思おもっていた。二人ふたりとも同おなじことを言いい出だせなかったということが分わかった。

Last week it rained and the shop was empty. When I honestly said I wanted to stop the English half, Daniel looked surprised and said, "Good." He had only wanted to practise Japanese, and for six months he had felt bad about making me speak English. I understood that neither of us had been able to bring it up.

それで、交換こうかんはやめた。「今日きょうから日本語にほんごで話はなしましょうか」とダニエルさんが言いった。ちょうど雨あめも止やんでいた。今いまは同おなじ喫茶店きっさてんで、一時間いちじかんぜんぶ日本語にほんごだ。彼かれの発音はつおんは少すこしずつ変かわってきた。私わたしの英語えいごは変かわらないままだが、これはもう言葉ことばの交換こうかんではなく、友ともだちと言いってもいい。

So we stopped the exchange. "Shall we talk in Japanese from today?" Daniel said. The rain had just stopped too. Now it is the same coffee shop and a full hour of Japanese. His pronunciation has been changing little by little. My English has stayed exactly as it was, but this is no longer a language exchange — you could say we are friends.
