Getting new glasses made: an eye exam reveals your vision has dropped, you try on frames, and pick a look that suits you. Grammar

〜たことがある

have done ~ before / have never done ~ (with the negative) — talking about experience

verb past plain form + ことがある／ない

富士山ふじさんに登のぼったことがあります。

I have climbed Mt. Fuji before.

〜なければならない

must do ~ / have to ~

verb ない-form (drop い) + ければならない

明日あしたまでにレポートを出ださなければなりません。

I must turn in the report by tomorrow.

〜(ら)れる

passive voice — something is done to the subject / the subject is affected by someone's action

godan: final -u → -a + れる；ichidan: stem + られる

先生せんせいに褒ほめられました。

I was praised by the teacher.

〜てみる

to try doing ~

verb て-form + みる

新あたらしいレストランに行いってみました。

I tried going to a new restaurant.

〜そうだ

looks like ~ / seems ~, based on appearance (not the hearsay そうだ)

i-adj/na-adj stem or verb ます-stem + そうだ

この料理りょうりはおいしそうです。

This dish looks delicious.

〜ようになる

to reach the point where ~ / to become able to ~

最近さいきん、遠とおくの物ものがよく見みえなくて、困こまっていました。本当ほんとうは一年いちねんに一度いちど、視力しりょく検査けんさをしなければならないのに、三年さんねんも行いっていませんでした。今いままで眼鏡めがねを作つくったことがなかったので、少すこし緊張きんちょうしましたが、駅前えきまえの眼鏡屋めがねやさんへ行いきました。

Lately, I hadn't been able to see distant things well, and it was bothering me. Really, I'm supposed to get an eye exam once a year, but I hadn't gone in three years. I'd never had glasses made before, so I was a little nervous, but I went to the glasses shop in front of the station.

店員てんいんさんに、まず視力しりょくを検査けんさしてもらいました。検査けんさのあと、店員てんいんさんに「視力しりょくがだいぶ落おちましたね」と言いわれました。

The clerk had me get my eyesight tested first. After the exam, the clerk told me, "Your eyesight has dropped quite a bit."

次つぎに、フレームを選えらびました。たくさんの種類しゅるいがあって迷まよいましたが、店員てんいんさんが「これはいかがですか」とすすめてくれたフレームをかけてみました。

Next, I chose a frame. There were so many types that I couldn't decide, but I tried on a frame the clerk recommended, saying, "How about this one?"

鏡かがみを見みると、そのフレームは私わたしの顔かおに似合にあいそうでした。店員てんいんさんも「よく似合にあいますね」と言いいました。

When I looked in the mirror, that frame seemed to suit my face well. The clerk said, "It really suits you."

レンズの度どは、検査けんさの結果けっかに合あわせて店員てんいんさんが選えらんでくれました。フレームの色いろも気きに入いって、この眼鏡めがねに決きめました。

The clerk picked out the lens strength for me based on the exam results. I liked the color of the frame too, so I decided on these glasses.

一週間後いっしゅうかんご、店員てんいんさんから電話でんわがありました。「眼鏡めがねができましたので、受うけ取とりに来きてください」ということでした。

A week later, the clerk called me. They said, "Your glasses are ready, so please come pick them up."

眼鏡めがねを受うけ取とって、すぐにかけてみました。すると、遠とおくの物ものまでよく見みえるようになりました。もっと早はやく作つくればよかったです。

I picked up the glasses and immediately tried them on. Then, I became able to see things in the distance clearly. I wished I had gotten them made sooner.
