Your first day at a new job: getting shown around, meeting coworkers, and learning the daily routine. It recycles grammar for decisions, instructions, and intentions — 〜ことになる (it's been decided that ~), 〜ところ (in the middle of ~), 〜ように (so that ~ / an instruction), 〜ておく (do ~ in advance), 〜たほうがいい (you'd better ~), and 〜つもり (intend to ~) — with workplace vocabulary you can reuse in a roleplay.

Grammar

〜ことになる

it's been decided / it works out that ~ (an outside decision, not your own choice)

verb plain (non-past) + ことになる

来月らいげつ、東京とうきょうで働はたらくことになりました。

It's been decided that I'll work in Tokyo next month.

〜ように

so that ~ / (an instruction) to ~; states a goal or a gentle order

verb plain (often potential/negative) + ように

忘わすれないように書かきます。

I write it down so I won't forget.

〜ておく

do ~ in advance / in preparation (and leave it that way)

verb て-form + おく

会議かいぎの前まえに資料しりょうを読よんでおきます。

I'll read the documents beforehand.

〜ところ

the point of ~ing; 〜ているところ = right in the middle of doing ~

verb (dictionary / ている / plain past) + ところ

ちょうど今いま、食たべているところです。

I'm eating right now.

〜たほうがいい

you'd better ~ / it's better to ~ (advice)

verb plain past + ほうがいい

早はやく寝ねたほうがいいですよ。

You'd better sleep early.

〜つもり

intend to ~ / plan to ~ (your own resolve)

verb plain (non-past) + つもり

週末しゅうまつは勉強べんきょうするつもりです。

I intend to study this weekend.

Starting this month, it's been decided that I'll work at a new company. Today is my first day at that workplace. I'd been a little nervous since the morning.

会社かいしゃに着つくと、部長ぶちょうが「おはようございます。今日きょうからよろしくね」と言いいました。私わたしも「よろしくお願ねがいします」と挨拶あいさつをしました。

When I arrived at the company, the department head said, "Good morning. Looking forward to working with you from today." I greeted them too, saying, "I look forward to working with you."

その後あと、先輩せんぱいが会社かいしゃの中なかを案内あんないしてくれました。そして、仕事しごとについて丁寧ていねいに説明せつめいしてくれました。今いま、私わたしはいろいろな仕事しごとを覚おぼえているところです。

訳 English

After that, a senior colleague showed me around the company. And they carefully explained the work to me. Right now, I'm in the middle of learning all sorts of tasks.

先輩せんぱいは同僚どうりょうも紹介しょうかいしてくれました。私わたしは一人ひとりずつに挨拶あいさつをしました。みんな親切しんせつで、優やさしそうな人ひとばかりでした。

My senpai introduced my coworkers too. I greeted each one. Everyone was kind — they all seemed like gentle people.

先輩せんぱいは「毎朝まいあさ、九時くじまでに来くるように」と言いいました。また、「大事だいじなことは、メモしておいてください」と教おしえてくれました。

My senpai said, "Come by nine every morning." They also taught me, "Please make a note of important things."

私わたしが「早はやく仕事しごとを覚おぼえたいです」と言いうと、先輩せんぱいは「最初さいしょは、分わからないことをすぐに聞きいたほうがいいですよ」とアドバイスしてくれました。

When I said, "I want to learn the work quickly," my senpai advised me, "At first, you'd better ask right away about things you don't understand."

初日しょにちは覚おぼえることが多おおくて、大変たいへんでした。でも、みんな優やさしかったので、安心あんしんしました。早はやくこの職場しょくばに慣なれて、一生懸命いっしょうけんめいがんばるつもりです。

There was a lot to remember on the first day, so it was tough. But everyone was kind, so I felt relieved. I intend to get used to this workplace quickly and work my hardest.
