Ordering at a busy cafe with a friend: choosing hot vs. iced, a size, for-here vs. takeout, and paying. It recycles everyday and polite-service grammar — 〜にする (I'll have ~), お〜になる & なさる (the staff's honorific speech), 〜てもらう (have someone do ~ for me), 〜たらどうですか (how about ~?), and 〜すぎる (too ~) — with café vocabulary you can reuse in a roleplay.

Grammar

〜にする

decide on ~ / I'll have ~ (choosing from options)

noun + にする

飲のみ物ものはコーヒーにします。

I'll have coffee to drink.

お〜になる

honorific 'you (do) ~' — raises the listener/subject; common in staff speech

お + verb ます-stem + になる

先生せんせいはもうお帰かえりになりました。

The teacher has already gone home (honorific).

なさる

honorific of する ('to do'); staff use どうなさいますか = 'how would you like to…?'

なさる／なさいます (respectful する)

Before you read — make your own sentences

土曜日どようび、私わたしは友達ともだちと買かい物ものに行いったあと、駅えきの近ちかくのカフェに入はいりました。そのカフェは人気にんきがあって、いつも込こんでいます。

On Saturday, after shopping with a friend, we went into a cafe near the station. That cafe is popular and always crowded.

レジの前まえに並ならんで、順番じゅんばんを待まちました。なかなか注文ちゅうもんが決きめられなくて、迷まよっていると、私わたしの番ばんになりました。店員てんいんさんが「いらっしゃいませ。ご注文ちゅうもんはお決きまりになりましたか」と聞ききました。

We lined up in front of the register and waited our turn. I couldn't decide on my order and was hesitating when it became my turn. The staff said, "Welcome. Have you decided on your order?"

私わたしがまだ迷まよっていると、友達ともだちが「新あたらしいカフェラテの大おおきいサイズにしたらどうですか」と言いいました。

訳 English

While I was still hesitating, my friend said, "How about the large size of the new cafe latte?"

おいしそうだったので、私わたしはホットのカフェラテにしました。サイズは大おおきいのにしました。店員てんいんさんは「店内てんないでめしあがりますか、お持もち帰かえりですか」と聞ききました。「店内てんないで」と答こたえると、「お支払しはらいはどうなさいますか」と聞きかれたので、カードで払はらいました。

訳 English

It looked delicious, so I went with a hot cafe latte. For the size, I chose the large. The staff asked, "Will you have it here, or is it to go?" When I answered, "For here," they asked, "How would you like to pay?" so I paid by card.

店員てんいんさんに、カップに名前なまえを書かいてもらいました。少すこし待まつと、名前なまえを呼よばれたので、カウンターでカフェラテを受うけ取とりました。

I had the staff write my name on the cup. After waiting a little, my name was called, so I picked up the cafe latte at the counter.

席せきに座すわって、カフェラテを飲のみました。でも、砂糖さとうを入いれたので、少すこし甘あますぎました。友達ともだちのアイスコーヒーを少すこしもらうと、そちらもおいしかったです。

訳 English

I sat down at a seat and drank the cafe latte. But because I'd added sugar, it was a little too sweet. When I had a bit of my friend's iced coffee, that was good too.

それでも、友達ともだちとゆっくり話はなせて、とてもいい時間じかんを過すごしました。今度こんどは持もち帰かえりにして、公園こうえんで飲のもうと思おもいます。

訳 English

Even so, I got to chat with my friend at a relaxed pace and had a really nice time. Next time I'll get it to go and drink it in the park.
