N4 consolidation story #225. The narrator goes to the bank to open a new account. They fill out a form, show their ID, set a PIN, receive a passbook and cash card, and set up online banking, asking the teller questions along the way. Recycles known N4 grammar with everyday bank vocab. Patterns: 〜なさい, 〜まま, 〜に気がつく, お〜になる, 〜ていただく, 〜ばいい.

Before you read — make your own sentences

Wanting to make a new bank account, I went to the bank in my neighborhood. At the counter the clerk in charge said, 'First, please fill in this form.'

用紙ようしを空欄くうらんのまま出だしてはいけないので、名前なまえや住所じゅうしょを丁寧ていねいに書かいた。書かき方かたが分わからない所ところは、記入きにゅうの方法ほうほうを教おしえていただいた。

訳 English

Since you must not submit the form left blank, I carefully wrote my name and address. For the parts where I didn't know how to write them, I had the clerk teach me the way to fill it in.

身分証明書みぶんしょうめいしょを見みせるとき、印鑑いんかんを持もってこなかったことに気きがついた。でも係かかりの人ひとは「サインだけで大丈夫だいじょうぶですよ」と言いってくれた。

訳 English

When I went to show my ID, I noticed I hadn't brought my personal seal. But the clerk told me, 'A signature alone is fine.'

口座こうざの暗証番号あんしょうばんごうは、自分じぶんで決きめればいいと言いわれた。係かかりの人ひとがお選えらびになる番号ばんごうは、誕生日たんじょうびを使つかわない方ほうがいいそうだ。

訳 English

I was told I just had to decide the account's PIN myself. As for the number you choose, it seems it's better not to use your birthday.

少すこし待まつと、通帳つうちょうとキャッシュカードキャッシュカードをもらえた。残高ざんだかや振込ふりこみは手数料てすうりょうがかかるが、同おなじ銀行ぎんこうなら無料むりょうだ。最後さいごに、スマホの使つかい方かたも教おしえていただいて、安心あんしんして家いえに帰かえった。

訳 English

After waiting a little, I received a passbook and a cash card. Checking the balance and making transfers incur a fee, but within the same bank it's free. Lastly, I had them teach me how to use the phone app too, and went home with peace of mind.
