A short everyday story about ordering a birthday flower bouquet at a flower shop: choosing colors, setting a budget, asking for a ribbon, and arranging delivery. Recycles six N4 grammar points: 〜まま, 〜られる (potential), 〜ようだ, 〜だけ, 〜より〜のほうが, and 〜そうだ（様態）.

My friend's birthday is coming up, so I decided to order a bouquet at the flower shop in front of the station. Every flower was fresh and looked very lively.

店みせには色いろとりどりの花はながあって、なかなか選えらべられなかった。白しろいバラばらより赤あかいバラばらのほうが友ともだちに似合にあいそうだった。

訳 English

The shop had flowers of all colors, and I couldn't easily choose. Rather than the white roses, the red roses looked like they would suit my friend better.

店員てんいんに予算よさんを聞きかれたので、「三千さんぜん円えんだけです」と答こたえた。その予算よさんでも立派りっぱな花束はなたばが作つくられるようだった。

訳 English

When the clerk asked about my budget, I answered, "Just three thousand yen." It seemed a splendid bouquet could be made even on that budget.

赤あかいバラばらを中心ちゅうしんに選えらび、「この色いろのまま包つつんでください」と頼たのんだ。白しろいリボンりぼんをつけてもらうと、もっと素敵すてきになりそうだった。

訳 English

I chose red roses as the centerpiece and asked, "Please wrap it just as this color is." When they added a white ribbon, it looked like it would become even lovelier.

店員てんいんは花はなをていねいに包つつみ、きれいなリボンりぼんを結むすんでくれた。花はなを落おとさないまま、運はこべるか心配しんぱいだった。

訳 English

The clerk carefully wrapped the flowers as they were and tied a pretty ribbon for me. I was worried about whether I could carry the flowers without dropping them.

それで、友ともだちの家いえまで自分じぶんで持もっていくより配達はいたつのほうが安心あんしんそうだった。誕生日たんじょうびの朝あさに届とどけるられるそうなので、配達はいたつを注文ちゅうもんして、店みせを出でた。

訳 English

So, rather than carrying it to my friend's house myself, delivery seemed more reassuring. Since it looked like they could deliver it on the morning of the birthday, I ordered delivery and left the shop.
