A notice arrived from the neighborhood association calling for participation in a river cleanup. My father had attended every year, but this year he has hurt his lower back. So it was decided that I would take part in the local activity in his place.
前日 の夜 、天気 予報 は強 い雨 で川 の水 が増 えるおそれがある川 の水 が増 えるおそれがある There is a risk that the river water will rise.と伝 えていた。しかし当日 の朝 は、予報 に反 して空 が明 るく、土手 には百人 ほどの住民 が集 まっていた。

The night before, the weather forecast reported strong rain with a risk that the river water would rise. But on the morning itself, contrary to the forecast, the sky was bright, and about a hundred residents had gathered on the riverbank.
係 の人 が説明 したとおりに予報 のとおりに雨 が降 った It rained just as the forecast said.、私 たちは四 つの組 に分 かれて、上流 から順 にごみを拾 った。ペットボトル、空 き缶 、こわれた傘 。一時間 で袋 は重 くなった。

Just as the person in charge explained, we split into four groups and picked up trash in order from upstream. Plastic bottles, empty cans, a broken umbrella. In an hour the bag had grown heavy.
隣 で作業 していた年配 の男性 が、「昔 はこの川 で子 どもがよく泳 いだものだ昔 はよくここで泳 いだものだ We used to swim here a lot long ago.」と話 した。工場 が増 えて水 が汚 れてからは、だれも近 づかなくなったそうだ。「きれいになったのは、住民 が積極的 に動 いたからですよ」と彼 は言 った。

An elderly man working next to me said, "Long ago children used to swim in this river a lot." Apparently, after factories increased and the water got dirty, nobody went near it anymore. "It became clean because the residents acted proactively," he said.

At the end the chairperson thanked me, but I had merely helped for two hours. Even so, the chairperson laughed and said, "There's no need to hold back. Protecting the river is everyone's responsibility."

On the way home I thought that in society many people consider local activities a nuisance. But the water seen from the riverbank was not as dirty as I had thought, and I decided to take part next year too.
