N3 consolidation story #136. The narrator decides to take up Japanese calligraphy, doubts whether they can do it, keeps practicing without giving up, and gradually improves. Natural adult prose recycling N3 grammar with everyday hobby and calligraphy vocab. Patterns: 〜かどうか, 〜さえ〜ば, 〜ずに, 〜につれて, 〜ようがない, 〜つつある.

This year, I decided to take up calligraphy as a new hobby. But I had absolutely no confidence about whether or not I could keep it up.

近ちかくの教室きょうしつで、先生せんせいは「練習れんしゅうさえすれば、だれでも上達じょうたつしますよ」と言いってくれた。その言葉ことばを信しんじて、わたしは筆ふでと墨すみを買かった。

訳 English

At a nearby class, the teacher told me, "As long as you practice, anyone will improve." Believing those words, I bought a brush and ink.

机つくえの上うえに明あかるいスタンドスタンドを置おき、毎晩まいばん集中しゅうちゅうして字じを書かいた。最初さいしょは少すこしも上手じょうずにならず、墨すみがなければ書かきようがないのに、その墨すみをこぼしてばかりだった。

訳 English

I put a bright desk lamp on my desk and concentrated on writing characters every night. At first I didn't get skillful one bit, and although there's no way to write without ink, I kept spilling that very ink.

それでもわたしは諦あきらめずに毎日まいにち練習れんしゅうを続つづけた。回数かいすうが増ふえるにつれて、筆ふでの動うごかし方かたが自然しぜんになっていった。

訳 English

Even so, I kept practicing every day without giving up. As the number of times increased, the movement of the brush became natural.

半年はんとしが過すぎたころ、先生せんせいに「字じが上達じょうたつしつつあるね」と褒ほめられた。書道しょどうはいつの間まにか、わたしの大切たいせつな趣味しゅみになっていた。

Around the time half a year had passed, the teacher praised me, saying, "Your characters are gradually improving." Before I knew it, calligraphy had become a precious hobby of mine.
