Over the long holiday I cleaned my room, and while I was at it I decided to tidy the back of the closet too. When I pulled out three heavy boxes, old photo albums were lined up inside.

The oldest photograph was taken in the middle of the last century, when my grandmother was still in her teens. As the years had passed the colors had faded, but the expressions on the faces remained clear.

今いまのカメラに比くらべて、昔むかしの写真しゃしんは数かずがとても少すくない。一枚いちまい一枚いちまいが大切たいせつで、家族かぞくの愛情あいじょうが感かんじられる。母ははが毎年まいとし箱はこを乾かわいた場所ばしょに移うつしていたおかげで、カビも生はえていなかった。

Compared with today's cameras, photographs from long ago are very few in number. Each single one is precious, and you can feel the family's affection in it. Thanks to my mother moving the boxes to a dry place every year, no mold had grown either.

来月らいげつ、祖母そぼは八十歳はちじゅっさいになる。その誕生日たんじょうびに向むけて、私わたしは写真しゃしんをデータにして、小ちいさな本ほんを作つくろうと考かんがえた。一日いちにちに二十枚にじゅうまいずつ取とり込こむことにしている。

Next month my grandmother turns eighty. For that birthday, I thought I would turn the photographs into data and make a small book. I make it a rule to scan twenty sheets a day.

While working, a photo of my father as a child turned up and surprised me. The way he laughs is exactly the same as it is now. When I arranged the photos on the desk and showed my mother, she said "How nostalgic," and stayed silent for a long time.

Sorting photographs takes more time than I expected. Even so, I can't bring myself to throw away a box in which the family's affection remains. When I imagine my grandmother's surprised face as she opens the book, the work becomes enjoyable too.
