During summer vacation, I decided to visit my grandmother in the countryside. I did nothing but ride trains, and for three whole hours I kept looking out the window.

電車でんしゃが進すすむにしたがって、町まちの景色けしきが緑みどりの山やまに変かわっていった。駅えきに着つくと、祖母そぼが笑顔えがおで待まっていて、懐なつかしさのあまり涙なみだが出でそうになった。

As the train advanced, the town scenery changed into green mountains. When I arrived at the station, my grandmother was waiting with a smile, and out of too much nostalgia tears almost came out.

祖母そぼの家いえでは、手作てづくりの料理りょうりがテーブルに全すべて並ならんでいた。梅干うめぼしはすっぱいが、子こどものころは苦手にがてだったのに、今いまは好すきで食たべられるようになった。梅干うめぼしの味あじは季節きせつによって少すこし違ちがうそうだ。

At my grandmother's home, all her handmade dishes were lined up on the table. Pickled plums are sour, and although I was bad with them as a child, now I've come to be able to eat them happily. Apparently the taste of pickled plums differs a little depending on the season.

午後ごごは祖母そぼの畑はたけを手伝てつだった。収穫しゅうかくした野菜やさいは全すべて新鮮しんせんで、土つちの匂においがした。祖母そぼは野菜やさいの話はなしをずっとしてくれて、いっしょに働はたらくのは楽たのしかった。

訳 English

In the afternoon I helped in my grandmother's field. The harvested vegetables were all fresh and smelled of soil. Grandmother kept telling me stories about the vegetables, and working together was fun.

夕方ゆうがた、空そらが暗くらくなり、台風たいふうが近ちかづくおそれがあると祖母そぼが言いった。また必かならず訪たずねると約束やくそくして、この田舎いなかでの時間じかんが全すべて宝物たからもののように感かんじた。

訳 English

In the evening the sky darkened, and grandmother said there was a risk a typhoon was approaching. I promised I would surely visit again, and I felt that all this time in the countryside was like a treasure.
