N3 consolidation story #142. A box of muddy vegetables arrives from a farm the narrator has no memory of signing up with, the phone call in which he cancels it ends up changing what his kitchen is for. Patterns: 〜ついでに, 〜おかげで, 〜ようがない, 〜たとたん, 〜わけではない, 〜ことにする.

火曜日かようびの夜よる、アパートの前まえに大おおきな箱はこが届とどいていた。頼たのんだ覚おぼえがない。伝票でんぴょうには知しらない農家のうかの名前なまえと、「野菜やさい定期便ていきびん」という文字もじがあった。箱はこを開あけたとたん、土つちのにおいがした。人参にんじんも大根だいこんも泥どろがついたままで、包装ほうそうはほとんどされていない。

On Tuesday night there was a large box in front of my flat. I had no memory of ordering it. The delivery slip carried the name of a farm I did not know and the words "vegetable subscription delivery." The moment I opened the box, there was a smell of soil. The carrots and the daikon still had mud on them, and there was almost no packaging.

一人暮ひとりぐらしの私わたしの冷蔵庫れいぞうこには、普段ふだん、水みずとビールとコンビニのサラダしか入はいっていない。料理りょうりが嫌きらいなわけではないが、平日へいじつは帰かえりが遅おそい。とりあえず野菜やさいを全部ぜんぶ冷蔵庫れいぞうこに押おし込こんだが、大根だいこんは長ながすぎて入はいらなかった。

I live alone, and my refrigerator normally holds nothing but water, beer and convenience-store salad. It is not that I dislike cooking, but on weekdays I get home late. For the time being I pushed all the vegetables into the fridge, though the daikon was too long to fit.

翌日よくじつ、契約けいやくを解約かいやくしようとして、私わたしは自分じぶんのメールを探さがした。三さんか月げつ前まえ、駅えきの前まえで試食ししょくをしていた店みせで、住所じゅうしょを書かいたことを思おもい出だした。「二にか月げつ無料むりょう」の紙かみは、その日ひのうちに捨すてていた。番号ばんごうが書かいてあったはずだが、もう調しらべようがない。

The next day, meaning to cancel the contract, I searched my own email. I remembered writing down my address three months ago at a stall in front of the station that was handing out samples. The leaflet saying "two months free" I had thrown away the same day. A number must have been printed on it, but now there is no way to look it up.

農家のうかに直接ちょくせつ電話でんわをかけた。出でたのは年配ねんぱいの女性じょせいで、解約かいやくの手続てつづきはすぐに終おわった。ついでに、私わたしは大根だいこんの食たべ方かたを聞きいてみた。女性じょせいは驚おどろいた声こえで「切きって炒いためるだけでおいしいですよ」と言いい、葉はも捨すてないでほしいと言いった。

I phoned the farm directly. An older woman answered, and cancelling took no time at all. While I was at it, I asked her how to eat a daikon. She sounded surprised. "Just cut it up and stir-fry it — it's delicious," she said, and asked me please not to throw the leaves away.

その夜よる、私わたしは十一時じゅういちじに台所だいどころに立たった。箱はこに入はいっていた農家のうかの紙かみに、簡単かんたんな作つくり方かたが三さんつ書かいてあった。その紙かみのおかげで、大根だいこんの葉はとごま油あぶらの料理りょうりができた。うまくできたとは言いえないが、味あじは濃こかった。初はじめての挑戦ちょうせんとしては悪わるくない。

That night I stood in my kitchen at eleven o'clock. On the farm's note inside the box, three simple recipes were written out. Thanks to that note, I managed a dish of daikon leaves and sesame oil. I cannot claim it turned out well, but the flavour was strong. As a first attempt, not bad.
