In the spring of my sixth year at the company, HR asked me to help with the new-graduate hiring interviews. I wanted to say no, but since I am the only person in my department in their thirties, I took it on. I am someone who was rejected by twenty companies while job hunting and got picked up last of all.

When I checked with HR the week before, they explained that the evaluation is a form where you score five items, and that the people conducting the interview should write as few of their own impressions as possible. The company's hiring criteria are apparently changing, gradually, over these last few years. Experience over academic record had already become the new policy.

Looking at that résumé, I could not help remembering myself six years ago. My own sheet had been just as blank. So I used the question I had been asked at my own interview back then, word for word: "In those three years, what did you change?"

On the other hand, the only one still in my memory that night was this student. Instead of raising her score, I copied her answer, word for word, into the remarks column. Deciding whether to hire her is not mine to do. At the very least, leaving a record is my responsibility.
