I work as the night-shift supervisor at a food factory. In June one new machine arrived. It closes the mouths of bags with heat, and the inside has to be kept clean. Only the daytime team was given the maker's training session. The night shift was handed a procedure sheet. Although the procedure sheet was handed out, there was not one person on the night shift who had been taught in front of the machine.

One night in July a bag went in at an angle and the machine jammed. Hojo-san, who is twenty-two, went to put a hand inside while the machine was still running. I happened to be passing right by and grabbed Hojo-san's shoulder. The heat plate is at 150 degrees. No matter how much of a hurry you are in, you must not put your hand inside. You have to stop the machine.

Hojo-san looked at the procedure sheet without moving, then said, "It is not written anywhere." I read it again myself. There are only three lines about a jam, and which button cuts off the heat is not written down. It was obvious that the people on the night shift did not know. The plant manager said that calling the maker's instructor out at night would cost 80,000 yen. Calling everyone in during the day is free, but the night-shift staff are asleep during the day. I asked that, instead of calling everyone in during the day, we have the instructor come to the factory at night. The plant manager shook his head. "This is a matter of life," I answered. "We cannot run this machine on nights before the training."

For two nights that machine stayed off, and the night shift closed the bags by hand. The output halved, and both nights were hard going. On the morning of the third day, the plant manager paid the 80,000 yen. The training was that same night, and we learned accurately which button cuts off the heat and what signal to use when two people work on it together.

After the training, Hojo-san admitted in a small voice to having done the same thing twice in June as well. Nobody had been watching then, apparently. Now, when the machine jams, somebody on the night shift always calls out and gives the signal. At every shift change I say the temperature of the heat plate out loud and call out the caution. Hojo-san has taken to asking questions frequently.
