N3 consolidation story #156. The circulating notice folder reaches the narrator on a Tuesday, he signs his own name on the bulky-rubbish form and leaves the rest to read properly later — and it sits on his shelf until Friday. The household next in line loses the deadline because of it, and had wanted the slot for a bed. What he gives up is his own place on the list. Patterns: 〜ものだから, 〜ような気がする, 〜ようとする, 〜たとたん, 〜ついでに, とおりに.

On Tuesday evening Shiraishi from next door brought round the circulating notice folder. Inside, the same sheet that is posted at the community centre had been slipped in: an application form for the free collection of bulky rubbish. On the spot I wrote just my own name and "one bookshelf". The rules were printed in fine small type, and because I was in the middle of making dinner, I thought I would read it all properly later and put it on the shelf.

棚たなの上うえの回覧板かいらんばんは、水曜日すいようびも木曜日もくようびも同おなじ場所ばしょにあった。何度なんども目めに入はいったが、もう読よんだような気きがして、手てが止とまった。怠なまけていたつもりはないと言いいたいが、実じつは怠なまけていた。申込書もうしこみしょは何枚なんまいも入はいっていたので、自分じぶんの分ぶんだけは水曜日すいようびに公民館こうみんかんへ出だしていた。金曜日きんようびの朝あさ、掃除そうじをしていて棚たなの上うえの紙かみがずれ、回覧板かいらんばんが下したに落おちた。開ひらいてみると、申込書もうしこみしょの下したに「申もうし込こみは十世帯じゅっせたいまでという制限せいげんがあります。木曜日もくようびまでに公民館こうみんかんへ出だしてください」と書かいてあった。火曜日かようびの夕方ゆうがたから三日みっか、回覧板かいらんばんは私わたしの家いえで止とまっていた。

The folder on the shelf was still in the same place on Wednesday and on Thursday. It caught my eye many times, but I felt as though I had already read it, and my hand stopped. I would like to say I was not neglecting it, but in fact I was. There were several copies of the form inside, so I had taken my own sheet to the community centre on Wednesday. On Friday morning, while I was cleaning, the paper on the shelf slipped out of place and the folder fell down. When I opened it, under the application form it said, "There is a limit of ten households. Please submit it to the community centre by Thursday." From Tuesday evening, for three days, the folder had stopped at my house.

慌あわてて回覧板かいらんばんを持もち、次つぎの大島おおしまさんの家いえへ行いった。玄関げんかんで謝あやまりながら渡わたすと、大島おおしまさんは最後さいごのページを開ひらいたとたん、少すこし黙だまった。それから、「うちは今月末こんげつまつから母ははと一緒いっしょに住すむので、あの部屋へやの古ふるいベッドを出だしたかったんです」と言いった。業者ぎょうしゃに頼たのむと六千円ろくせんえんかかるらしい。その表情ひょうじょうを見みて、私わたしは気きの毒どくで何なにも言いえなかった。私わたしが三日みっか止とめたために、大島おおしまさんは申もうし込こみそのものができなかった。

In a panic I picked up the folder and went to the Oshima house next in line. As I handed it over at the entrance, apologising, the moment Oshima opened the last page they fell silent for a little. Then they said, "My mother is coming to live with us from the end of this month, so I wanted to get the old bed out of that room." Apparently asking a contractor costs six thousand yen. Seeing that expression, I felt so sorry for them that I could say nothing. Because I had stopped the folder for three days, Oshima could not apply at all.

I went straight on to the house of the neighbourhood association head. The head was just about to get on a bicycle, but listened to my account. The name list had already been submitted officially to the community centre, and the ten households were full. I asked for my own slot to be passed to Oshima. The head thought for a little and said, "The collection is the week after next, so if you rewrite the name by Monday morning it will still be in time."

Just as the head had told me, on Monday morning I took the rewritten application form to the community centre. Oshima's name went into the place where mine had been. On the day of the collection, seeing the old bed set out in front of the Oshima house, I could finally breathe. My bookshelf is still in the corner of the room. The next collection is half a year away, I hear. Since then I pass the folder on to the next house the same day I receive it. As for reading it, I do that in front of the notice board while I am out shopping. Now that I know I am the sort of person who is careless, I do not keep it in the house. The same notice is posted up there, so that is enough.
