N3 consolidation story #155. A former colleague asks the narrator to act as a reference, and the narrator agrees without thinking. Four days later the hiring company calls and asks about the one thing he had decided never to bring up again — a deadline missed two years ago and covered up. He answers in full, including what came after, and phones his former colleague the same night, before any result is known. Patterns: 〜たばかり, 〜に違いない, 〜ずにはいられない, 〜おかげで, 〜わけにはいかない, ことにしている.

Kawaguchi-san, who until last year was a colleague in my section, phoned me with a request. "I've only just applied to a new company, and I'd like you to take a call checking my background, as a former colleague — would you?" I was told. I took it on lightly. Kawaguchi-san is a capable person. We worked together for three years, and I was helped many times by how fast the work got done. There was just one thing I did not want to remember.

二年前にねんまえ、川口かわぐちさんは客きゃくに出だす資料しりょうの締しめ切きりを一日いちにち過すぎたことがある。しかも、その日ひのうちにできたと課長かちょうに報告ほうこくして、遅おくれたことを隠かくした。後あとで本当ほんとうのことが分わかり、課長かちょうは川口かわぐちさんをひどく責せめた。私わたしはその時とき、なぜ言いえなかったのかだけを聞きいた。欠点けってんのない人ひとはいない。だから、あの件けんはもう口くちに出ださないことにしている。

Two years ago, Kawaguchi-san went one day past the deadline on materials to be submitted to a client. On top of that, Kawaguchi-san reported to the section chief that it had been finished that same day, hiding the fact that it was late. The truth came out afterwards, and the section chief blamed Kawaguchi-san harshly. At the time, all I asked was why they had not been able to say so. There is no person without faults. So I make it a rule not to bring that matter up any more.

四日後よっかご、応募先おうぼさきの会社かいしゃから電話でんわがあった。先方せんぽうの担当たんとうの方かたは丁寧ていねいで、最初さいしょは仕事しごとの内容ないようを聞きくだけだった。ところが最後さいごに、「川口かわぐちさんが締しめ切きりを守まもれなかったことはありませんか」と聞きかれた。私わたしは少すこしの間あいだ、答こたえられなかった。先方せんぽうは例れいの件けんを何なにかの形かたちで知しっているに違ちがいない。ここで「ありません」と言いえば、川口かわぐちさんは採用さいようされるかもしれない。しかし、嘘うそをつくわけにはいかない。

Four days later, the company Kawaguchi-san had applied to called. The person in charge on their side was polite, and at first only asked about the work. But at the end, I was asked, "Has there ever been a time when Kawaguchi-san could not meet a deadline?" For a moment I could not answer. They must know about that matter in some form. If I said "No" here, Kawaguchi-san might be hired. But I could not tell a lie.

私わたしは正直しょうじきに話はなした。二年前にねんまえに一日いちにち遅おくれたこと、それを隠かくしたこと。そして、その後あとの川口かわぐちさんのことも全部ぜんぶ話はなした。あの件けんのあと、川口かわぐちさんは自分じぶんから確認かくにんの表ひょうを作つくり、課かの締しめ切きりを毎朝まいあさ全員ぜんいんに配くばるようになった。あの表ひょうのおかげで、課か全体ぜんたいの遅おくれがほとんどなくなった。正直しょうじきに言いえば、あの表ひょうは私わたし自身じしんも救すくった。「苦労くろうして直なおした欠点けってんは、もう欠点けってんではないと思おもいます」と私わたしは言いった。担当たんとうの方かたは最後さいごまで聞きいて、礼れいを言いって電話でんわを切きった。

I spoke honestly. That Kawaguchi-san had been a day late two years ago, and had hidden it. And I told them everything about what came after, too. After that incident, Kawaguchi-san made a checking chart unprompted, and began handing the section's deadlines out to everyone every morning. Thanks to that chart, delays across the whole section almost disappeared. Honestly, that chart saved me as well. "A fault mended through hardship is no longer a fault," I said. The person in charge listened to the end, said thank you and hung up.

その日ひの夜よる、私わたしは川口かわぐちさんに電話でんわをかけた。結果けっかはまだ分わからない。それでも、何なにを話はなしたかを本人ほんにんに伝つたえずにはいられなかった。「あの件けんも話はなしました。その後あとにあなたがしたことも、全部ぜんぶ話はなしました」。少すこし黙だまったあと、川口かわぐちさんは「ありがとうございます」と言いった。それから、「面倒めんどうなことを頼たのんですみません」とも言いった。私わたしは面倒めんどうだとは思おもわなかった。冷静れいせいに自分じぶんの欠点けってんを人ひとに話はなせる人ひとなら、どこの会社かいしゃでも評価ひょうかされるだろう。

That night I called Kawaguchi-san. The result was still unknown. Even so, I could not help telling Kawaguchi-san directly what I had said. "I talked about that matter too. And I told them everything you did afterwards." After a short silence, Kawaguchi-san said, "Thank you." Then they said, "Sorry for asking you to go to such trouble." I did not think of it as trouble. Someone who can talk about their own faults calmly will be valued at any company.
